Our Cadre5 Lab Partners division has partnered with the Digital Platform Services Group of the Digital Services Infrastructure & Operations Division of the Information Technology Services Directorate (ITSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to recruit a Senior Azure Cloud Engineer with expertise in the design, implementation, and operational support of Azure-based solutions, including environments that integrate AI services. The ideal candidate will have strong experience across Azure platforms and the ability to apply standardized patterns while adapting to workload-specific requirements.

This premier research institution located near Knoxville in Oak Ridge, TN, addresses national needs through impactful research and world-leading research centers.

## The Role

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and optimize Azure-based cloud environments and AI-enabled solutions
  • Support delivery of multiple concurrent Azure workloads, ensuring environments are properly configured, accessible, and aligned with requirements
  • Define and enforce best practices for Azure deployment, configuration, and AI service integration
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to teams, supporting adoption of Azure and AI capabilities
  • Ensure performance, scalability, and reliability across Azure environments supporting both application and AI workloads
  • Manage and secure Azure environments in compliance with organizational and federal requirements

## Job Responsibilities:

  • Azure Cloud Operations and AI Enablement
  • Provide technical expertise across Azure services, including IaaS, PaaS, and Azure AI services
  • Design, build, maintain, and automate Azure environments using tools such as Azure Virtual Machines, Azure AI services, Azure Machine Learning, Azure OpenAI, and Terraform
  • Implement and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to support consistent and repeatable deployment of Azure environments
  • Support integration of AI services into Azure environments, ensuring proper configuration, access, and performance
  • Configure Azure environments to support workloads with varying requirements related to data handling, access, and performance
  • Optimize Azure-based AI/ML workflows for scalability and cost efficiency
  • Develop and test disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity strategies for Azure workloads
  • Monitor and maintain Azure environments to ensure alignment with operational and project-specific requirements
  • Continuously improve Azure engineering practices to support efficient delivery across a growing portfolio of workloads
  • Environment Delivery, Coordination, and Support
  • Coordinate with networking, cybersecurity, and application teams to ensure Azure environments are properly configured and accessible
  • Support end-to-end delivery of Azure environments, including design, provisioning, validation, and troubleshooting
  • Validate connectivity, access, and functionality across Azure resources (e.g., DNS, routing, private endpoints)
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to Azure services, connectivity, and environment configurations
  • Support onboarding of application and research teams to Azure environments, ensuring usability within established constraints
  • Contribute to documentation, runbooks, and knowledge sharing to improve consistency and reduce delivery friction
  • Communication and Collaboration
  • Demonstrate strong communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for Azure cloud services and AI-enabled solutions
  • Educate and guide teams on best practices for Azure deployments and AI service usage
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to support evolving requirements across Azure workloads
  • Apply strong problem-solving skills to address complex Azure-related challenges
  • Exhibit excellent interpersonal, written, and presentation skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders
  • Proactively address incidents, identify root causes, resolve issues, and implement preventive measures
  • Educate and train teams on implementing new Azure and AI-based initiatives, ensuring adoption of best practices
  • Cultivate positive relationships with industry leaders and stakeholders to keep the organization at the forefront of cloud and AI innovations
  • Employ exceptional problem-solving skills to identify and resolve cloud and AI-related issues before they impact productivity
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for Azure and AI solutions, driving strategic initiatives and fostering collaboration across teams

## Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS in business, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, systems analysis, or a related field, with 8+ years of experience in cloud computing technologies.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Proven experience with Azure Cloud and cloud infrastructure, including firewalls, load balancers, DNS, and networking concepts.
  • Expertise with virtualization technologies such as VMware vCenter and vSphere.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation tools, including Terraform, PowerShell, Ansible, Python, and familiarity with cloud automation frameworks.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance may be required, therefore US Citizenship is required.

## Preferred Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree in business, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, systems analysis, or a related field, with 7+ years of experience in cloud computing technologies.
  • Azure certifications, such as Azure Solutions Architect Expert or Azure AI Engineer Associate.
  • Familiarity with Azure OpenAI and AI/ML frameworks.
  • Experience in database architecture, ETL, business intelligence, big data, machine learning, and advanced analytics.
  • Strong understanding of authentication, authorization, identity, and access management.
  • Familiarity with hybrid cloud deployments and solutions addressing data challenges across multiple cloud environments.
  • Ability to work independently on complex issues and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Strong ability to present technical concepts in a clear, user-friendly, and approachable manner.
