Position Overview
The successful candidate will typically manage medium sized projects of moderate complexity or similar scopes of work on larger or more complex projects.
Candidates shall have prior design management experience and demonstrate a strong technical background as a design engineer or construction professional with design-build experience in at least one of the disciplines common to infrastructure projects. Thay shall have a multi-disciplinary project background, an ability to integrate project teams and have a comprehensive understanding of project delivery and controls processes.

This position is based in our Burnaby office.
Responsibilities
- Manage and lead large, diverse, multidisciplinary project teams as the Design Manager or Senior Design Manager during the pursuit and final design of infrastructure projects.
- Act as the overall leader to the design team by setting expectations, developing the plan in either the pursuit and/or final design project phases, and providing oversight to support groups.
- Develop staffing plans and challenging but achievable project budgets / schedules and execute projects according to plan.
- Identify and communicate project risks / opportunities and prepare and execute mitigation and capture plans.
- Review and manage upstream and downstream engineering contracts considering risk profiles and strategic contracting objectives.
- Prepare subcontractor scope, pricing and other necessary design execution stipulations. Monitor performance of the work to ensure compliance with the agreement(s). Ensure the completion of weekly subconsultant inputs such as hours and schedule reporting and claiming.
- Recognize when course correction is needed and coordinate with the team to develop effective recovery plans. Escalate issues to the Design Sponsor and work together toward a solution.
- Work with Contract Managers to develop and administer subconsultant design contracts. Review and manage prime and subconsultant design contracts.
- Represent Kiewit’s design team and develop effective relationships with the construction and client teams. Communicate and demonstrate the value of Kiewit’s design-build processes to operating districts and Owners.
- Monitor, control and communicate commercial, schedule and quality performance. Work with Discipline Leads and design management team to prepare comprehensive and reliable project controls reports that fairly represent current status and forecasted end of project results.
- Partner with design Discipline Leads and the operating district Project / Construction Manager, estimators and superintendents to complete of all design scope in accordance with project management plans with deliverables that are correct, provide cost and schedule effectiveness, can be constructed safely, and are responsive to Client requirements.
- Monitor design development, ensuring compliance with RFP and technical requirements. Ensure design strategy, justification, risk and opportunity is documented and communicated to the Design Sponsor, operating District Sponsor and Project / Construction Manager.
- Partner with the Design Quality Manager to ensure Kiewit's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including our Quality Management System, are communicated, and followed. Coordinate alternative procedures with the Design Sponsor if SOPs are not appropriate or effective for a particular application. Contribute to the development and improvement of SOPs.
- Travel when needed, including working away from home when required by a project assignment.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, construction management or architecture from an accredited post-secondary institution
- Licensed Professional Engineer / Architect with ability to obtain registration in other provinces / states as projects may require.
- At least 15 years of experience contributing to alternative delivery projects (e.g., progressive design-build, design-build, alliance, P3) in both the pre- and post-award phases. At least six of these years in the Project Manager / Design Manager position with project management responsibility for multi-disciplinary projects with construction values at least $200M.
- Proven project delivery experience within one or more of heavy civil, bridge, transportation, rail / transit, port / marine and hydropower type projects is required.
- Strong technical background as a design engineer / architect or construction professional for design-build projects in at least one of the disciplines common to infrastructure projects.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills. The ability to clearly communicate technical and contractual matters to diverse technical and non-technical audiences is essential for success in this role.

Base Compensation: $200,000/yr - $230,000/yr
