The Role
We are seeking a detail‑oriented and technically strong
Senior Accountant, Finance
, to join our finance team. This role plays a critical part in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger, supporting a disciplined month‑end close, and delivering dependable financial and partner reporting in a complex professional services environment.
Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Senior Accountant will own key accounting areas, exercise professional judgment, and collaborate closely with AR, expense processing, and leadership teams. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual pursuing their CPA who is looking to deepen their industry exposure to professional services accounting and build toward a future leadership role. Note that this is an internal finance role and not client facing.
What You’ll Do
Month-End Close & General Ledger Ownership
- Prepare monthly journal entries, including payroll accruals, prepaids, interest allocations, and recurring entries.
- Complete monthly bank, credit card, balance sheet, and selected income statement reconciliations; investigate and resolve variances.
- Support a timely, accurate month‑end close by coordinating dependencies across finance functions.
Accounts Receivable & Expense Coordination
- Coordinate the accounts receivable month‑end close, including AR Target Reports and required adjustments.
- Review employee expense reports for accuracy and policy compliance; support expense submission processes and issue resolution.
Partnership Accounting
- Generate and maintain monthly production, utilization, and partner draw reports.
- Process all partner financial transactions and balance equity accounts.
- Calculate and process retired partner true‑ups in accordance with partner agreements; assist with quarterly calculations and reports.
Tax & Regulatory Compliance
- Prepare and file indirect tax returns (WCB, PST, GST, EHT).
- Complete annual regulatory and compliance filings, including CPA Dues Census, Public Practice Fee Census, and PG Survey.
Reporting, Projects & Continuous Improvement
- Support preparation of financial statements and management reports for review by the Controller and CFO.
- Participate in finance‑related systems, reporting, and/or process improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to ad hoc analysis and special projects as requested by leadership.
What Success Looks Like In Your First Year
By the end of Year One, a successful Senior Accountant will have:
- Independently managed assigned areas of the month‑end close with minimal review notes and consistently met deadlines.
- Demonstrated strong ownership of general ledger accuracy, with reconciliations that are complete, timely, and reviewable.
- Built trusted relationships across AR, expense processing, and stakeholders as a reliable point of contact.
- Ensured timely and accurate partner reporting, including partner drawings calculations and related support schedules.
- Identified and implemented at least one meaningful process or reporting improvement that enhances efficiency, accuracy, or transparency.
- Developed a solid understanding of the firm’s partnership structure, reporting needs, and compliance requirements.
- Positioned themselves as a strong pipeline candidate for future progression within the finance team.
What You Bring
Educational Background:
Actively pursuing CPA designation (CPA PEP in progress, near completion preferred).
Experience
- 3–4 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within a professional services firm or partnership‑based environment.
- Hands‑on experience with full‑cycle accounting, month‑end close, and general ledger management.
- Exposure to partner‑level or intercompany accounting (draws, allocations, equity balances) is a strong asset.
- Experience preparing and filing indirect tax returns (WCB, PST, GST, EHT) and completing regulatory filings or surveys.
Skills & Attributes
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with accounting or ERP systems required (Dynamics 365 Business Central is an asset).
- Critical thinking and analytical skills with strong mindfulness.
- Ability to exercise professional judgment and manage confidential information with discretion.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interpret and explain financial information.
