Role summary

23andMe is seeking a Software Engineer II to join their Engineering team. This role focuses on building and operating large-scale distributed compute pipelines that process population-scale genetic data. You will work with Python, infrastructure as code (Terraform, Docker, AWS), and distributed systems to translate scientific algorithms into production services. Responsibilities include defining and managing cloud infrastructure, debugging production incidents, and owning the end-to-end development lifecycle of the systems you build. The role requires a B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent, 4+ years of industry experience, and deep Python expertise.

### Who you are
- B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent; 4+ years of industry experience
- Deep, hands-on Python: libraries, services, data pipelines
- Infrastructure as code experience, ideally in Terraform on AWS, containerized in Docker
- Comfort operating in distributed systems at scale: debugging, observability, performance

### What the job involves
- We’re looking for a Software Engineer II to join our world class Engineering team. Every time a 23andMe customer discovers a new relative or learns something meaningful about their ancestry, a compute pipeline you helped build made that possible
- The Compute Pipelines team owns the infrastructure that processes population-scale genetic data – billions of relationships, distributed across a global customer base – and turns raw DNA into science-backed results
- You'll work directly with product managers and scientists in computational biology, statistical genetics, and population genetics. Domain expertise isn't required but intellectual curiosity is. You'll need to understand a hard problem deeply before you can implement it correctly at scale, and you'll own what you build end to end
- Implement and operate large-scale distributed compute pipelines in Python that process genetic data at population scale
- Translate cutting-edge scientific algorithms into production services, working closely with scientists to understand the problems
- Define and manage cloud infrastructure as code, with an eye toward reliability, cost, and security
- Debug production incidents and get services back online – you'll own what you ship
- Contribute to results that power features like Ancestry Composition, computational family trees, genetic phasing, DNA relatives, and health risk prediction

### Benefits
- Comprehensive health, vision, and dental plans
- Family planning, support, and leave for parents
- Mental healthcare
- Student loan assistance
- Flexible time off
- Dog friendly office
