Job Description
We are looking for a Full-Time Lead Engineer to lead the development and maintenance of our technology, including our mobile app, and help lead the overall technical direction of the organization.
In this role, you will help improve and maintain the technology people rely on during emergencies. You’ll work closely with our product and design team, as well as users and partners, to expand this lifesaving technology to more communities across the country.
You will set the technical direction, write and review code, fix technical issues, and make sure our systems are stable and scalable. You’ll also work with other teams to make sure our engineering plans support the organization’s goals and product decisions.
This role is a great fit for someone who is strong technically, enjoys helping shape product decisions, and likes managing projects. You’ll be involved in the full process — from planning and building to testing and launching. We’re looking for someone who does well in a fast moving team, is comfortable taking on different responsibilities, and wants their work to make a real impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Set engineering goals aligned with the organization’s mission and strategic priorities.
- Set the technical direction for the team, with a focus on JavaScript and TypeScript.
- Develop and maintain high-quality, scalable code for our mobile and web applications (React and React Native).
- Design and implement reliable, scalable, high-performing systems and infrastructure with a cost-efficient mindset.
- Mentor, teach, and manage other engineers and teams that volunteer and/or work with accesSOS.
- Engaging closely with the accesSOS team, users, and external stakeholders to ensure exceptional user experiences.
- Document code, architectural decisions, and processes clearly and consistently.
- Managing project timelines and resources efficiently to ensure timely delivery of features and products.
- Collaborate across teams on decisions ranging from UI/UX design to backend architecture.
- Regularly test the product, monitor performance, and implement improvements.
- Contribute to the product roadmap and overall technical vision.
- Continuously improve user interfaces to enhance usability and accessibility.
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience building and owning a complete product end-to-end.
- 3+ years of experience developing cross-platform mobile applications for Android and iOS, specifically with React Native or similar technologies.
- Have successfully shipped JavaScript/TypeScript applications to a production environment.
- Familiar with various cloud platforms such as Google Cloud, Firebase, AWS and Netlify.
- Familiarity working with integrating 3rd-party APIs.
- Exposure to UI libraries and UX collaboration tools like Figma.
- Familiarity with Firebase and Google Analytics.
- Experience leading and mentoring teams.
- Experience with cross-collaboration across an organization.
- Self-organized, open-minded, and proactive approach to work.
- Be a good human being, collaborative in nature, enjoying teamwork and achieving ambitious goals.
- Alignment with accesSOS’s mission.
The ideal candidate will also have:
- 2+ years of product management experience in a tech company, preferably within a startup environment.
- Strong understanding of accessibility principles, WCAG 2.1, and commitment to inclusive product development.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams like design, marketing and leadership.
- Experience building GenAI integrations into Full-stack applications.
- External partner negotiation experience.
- Ability to bridge design, engineering, user engagement, and brand awareness.
- Comfortable working in a startup, semi-structured environment.
Salary and Benefits
- Salary negotiable, depending on experience
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- 20 paid holidays annually
- Generous paid time off
- 401K retirement plan
