UX/UI Designer
About The Company

Our core mission revolves around leveraging information technology to promote transparency, accessibility, and efficiency in civic engagement. We are a diverse, collaborative, and people-centered organization that values integrity, compassion, inquisitiveness, authenticity, and unconventional thinking. At Skyward, we foster a culture where creativity meets purpose, ensuring that every team member is motivated to contribute meaningfully to our civic tech initiatives. Our commitment to ethical practices and continuous improvement drives us to deliver impactful solutions that serve the public interest while maintaining a relaxed yet energetic work environment.
About The Role
We are seeking a talented UX/UI Designer for a temporary six-month engagement to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate is someone who excels at simplifying complex interfaces and bringing clarity to fast-paced development environments. This role complements our existing UX design capabilities by focusing on creating scalable, consistent, and user-friendly digital experiences for federal clients, specifically supporting Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) platforms and related digital services. You will work closely with an experienced UX Designer to enhance design workflows, document design decisions, and build robust design systems aligned with modern frontend frameworks such as SvelteKit and React. Your contributions will directly impact how government agencies and the public interact with vital information, ensuring accessibility, usability, and efficiency in digital government services.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree in UX, Visual Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or a related field. A minimum of three years of product-focused UX/UI experience is required, with preference given to those with experience in government or civic technology sectors. A strong portfolio demonstrating original thinking, human-centered design, and system-level design skills is essential. Proficiency in design tools such as Figma, Sketch, or equivalent is expected, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with developers and cross-functional teams. Candidates should have a keen interest in AI, machine learning, and the evolving relationship between humans and intelligent systems. Excellent communication skills, a proactive mindset, and curiosity about technical decisions will help you thrive in this role. Exposure to AI-assisted design tools or a desire to integrate AI into workflows is a plus. Even if you do not meet all qualifications, we encourage passionate individuals to apply, as Skyward values growth and potential as much as experience.
Responsibilities
- Design intuitive, accessible user experiences supporting FOIA platforms and digital government services for federal clients.
- Partner closely with an existing UX Designer to bring structure, consistency, and refinement to fast-moving design initiatives.
- Document design workflows, decisions, and prototypes clearly to facilitate efficient development and implementation.
- Build, maintain, and refine design systems aligned with modern frontend frameworks such as SvelteKit and React to ensure scalability and consistency.
- Create wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs that translate complex workflows into simple, user-friendly interfaces.
- Leverage AI tools to accelerate design processes, including prototyping, research synthesis, and usability testing.
- Enhance design-to-development handoffs to reduce bottlenecks and enable rapid delivery cycles.
- Iterate designs based on stakeholder feedback while maintaining a balance between speed and thoughtful, scalable solutions.
- Ensure all designs meet accessibility standards (Section 508/WCAG) and usability best practices.
- Collaborate effectively with product managers, engineers, and stakeholders to keep projects aligned with goals and timelines.

Employees enjoy 15 days of paid leave, 7 days of sick leave, and 2 days of bereavement leave, along with 11 paid federal holidays. We also provide up to 40 hours for jury duty, a 401(k) plan with a 4% employer contribution (no vesting period), and up to four weeks of paid maternity and paternity leave.
