Primary Purpose
We are seeking a Software Engineer to join the Order Capture organization, focused on building resilient, scalable, and high-performance cloud-native systems that power our e-commerce experiences. This role is backend-leaning but ideal for a full-stack engineer who is comfortable contributing to front-end development when needed.
You will partner with cross-functional engineering teams to design, build, and deliver software solutions that power critical consumer-facing order flows. Given strategic objectives, you will independently drive solutions aligned with industry best practices and enterprise standards.
Our flexible/ hybrid work schedule includes 3 in-person days at one of our core locations and 2 remote days. Our core office locations include Chicago, IL.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Design and implement scalable backend services and APIs that support critical order-processing workflows across web and mobile.
  • Build front-end components and internal dashboards using modern JavaScript frameworks as needed.
  • Develop comprehensive automated test suites (unit, integration, contract, E2E) to ensure software quality and maintainability.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and optimize production systems while driving continuous performance and reliability improvements.
  • Create clear technical documentation, architectural diagrams, runbooks, and onboarding guides.
  • Build and enhance observability (metrics, logs, traces) using APM tools such as Datadog, New Relic, or Splunk.
  • Provide on-call support as part of a rotation, partnering with teams through PagerDuty for incident response and resolution.
  • Collaborate with QA, SRE, and Operations teams to ensure service readiness, operational excellence, and smooth deployments.
  • Implement robust CI/CD pipelines and deployment practices that enable safe, automated releases across environments.
  • Use agentic AI tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, IDE agents) to accelerate coding, debugging, testing, and documentation workflows.
  • Contribute to AI-assisted development workflows, including automation patterns and model deployment pipelines integrated into CI/CD.
  • Collaborate with product managers and the engineering team during discovery, refinement, and grooming of Jira stories to shape meaningful, well-scoped work.
  • Partner with architecture and cross-domain teams to design scalable, secure, and maintainable technical solutions.
  • Influence team members through strong engineering judgment, communication, and domain knowledge.
  • Mentor junior engineers, promote best practices, and support continuous improvement across the team.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent professional experience.
  • 6+ years of experience building and delivering scalable software systems.
  • Strong proficiency in backend technologies such as Kotlin, Java, and Spring Boot.
  • Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., Vue.js, React, Node.js, Nuxt.js).
  • Experience with relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cosmos DB).
  • Proven experience designing and developing microservices and API-driven backend systems.
  • Deep understanding of software design patterns and distributed systems.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Familiarity with agentic AI systems and MCP-based integrations is a strong plus.
  • Hands-on experience using GitHub Copilot or LLM-based tools for accelerating development.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Experience building observability into systems using Datadog, New Relic, or Splunk.
  • Strong Agile/Scrum/Kanban expertise using tools like Jira and GitHub.
  • Background in e-commerce or transactional systems (cart, checkout, payments, order lifecycle) is a plus
  • Proven ability to improve reliability, observability, and operational excellence.
  • Experience with best security practices: PCI, tokenization, secrets management, OWASP.
  • Expertise event-driven architectures (Kafka), idempotency, and processing guarantees.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with order lifecycle management
  • Experience with agentic AI systems and MCP tool integrations.
  • Experience using Karate for service testing.
  • Effective communicator who can clearly articulate technical ideas.
  • Ability to lead through influence and mentor less-experienced engineers.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment in selecting technologies, patterns, and approaches.
  • Performance tuning and optimization to meet strict SLAs.
  • Familiarity with GraphQL, including building or consuming GraphQL APIs.

Salary Range: $125,040 - $187,560
Actual compensation offered to a candidate may vary based on their unique qualifications and experience, internal equity, and market conditions. Final compensation decisions will be made in accordance with company policies and applicable laws.
