Alberta Innovates is seeking a Cybersecurity Analyst - Student to support work that advances research, innovation, and technology development in Alberta.

The Opportunity
The Summer Student supports Alberta Innovates’ cybersecurity, disaster recovery, and digital risk management initiatives by bridging business needs with technology, security, and resilience considerations. This role provides hands-on experience analyzing business processes, identifying cybersecurity and continuity risks, and supporting the development of secure, resilient, and compliant solutions across innovation programs and internal operations.
Working closely with cybersecurity, IT, and business stakeholders, the student will assist in gathering and documenting requirements, assessing current-state processes, and contributing to cybersecurity risk assessments, disaster recovery planning, and business continuity documentation. The role offers exposure to real-world cybersecurity governance, risk management, disaster recovery (DR), and business continuity management (BCM) practices within a public-sector innovation organization.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for duties that will include:
Outcome 1: Security Operations Alert Triage

  • Monitor and review incoming security alerts.
  • Analyze alert details for severity and impact.
  • Gather supporting log data.
  • Escalate confirmed or suspicious alerts.
  • Document analysis steps and findings.
  • Assist in tuning alert rules.
  • Follow predefined response procedures.
  • Contribute to workflow improvements.

Outcome 2: Disaster Recovery Planning

  • Assist in documenting DR procedures.
  • Support review and maintenance of DR plans.
  • Participate in business-impact and risk assessments.
  • Help coordinate DR testing.
  • Track remediation actions.
  • Maintain DR documentation repositories.
  • Support identification of critical systems.
  • Assist with reporting on DR readiness.

Outcome 3: Business Analysis Requirements Gathering

  • Engage stakeholders to understand needs.
  • Document business processes and requirements.
  • Translate needs into actionable requirements.
  • Facilitate requirements workshops.
  • Analyze workflows for improvement.
  • Gather feedback to refine requirements.
  • Support creation of business cases.
  • Prepare and present requirement summaries.

Required
Qualifications and Skills
Enrolled in a Business Analysis diploma and plans to complete Cybersecurity Certificate/Diploma
Preferred
Education: Business Analysis Diploma (in progress)
SME Requirement: Strong interest in cybersecurity
Certifications: CompTIA certifications in progress
