Role summary

The Weld/Automation Engineer provides essential support for welding, robotics, tooling, equipment controls, instruments, PLC controls, and plant automation within the engineering and operations departments. This role involves planning and executing operational and performance tests on electrical, electromechanical, and control systems for manufacturing processes. The engineer will also develop and modify programs to meet plant objectives, collaborating with operations, program management, tooling, maintenance, and electricians. Key responsibilities include implementing automation equipment, evaluating components and suppliers, ensuring control system functionality and safety, creating preventative maintenance plans, training technicians, and supporting quality initiatives by participating in problem-solving teams. The position requires a strong understanding of safety regulations and PLC programming.

Job Summary:

The Weld/Automation Engineer provides support with welding, robots, tooling, equipment controls, instruments, PLC controls, and plant automation. Candidate must be able to plan and conduct operational and performance tests on electrical, electromechanical, experimental products, controls, tooling, and systems for new and current manufacturing processes. Applications are broad and varied, requiring inclusion of technical and business context, and solving non-routine problems to eliminate down time and decrease quality defects to the customer. The Weld/Automation Engineer will also write, create, and modify programs to meet the plant objectives. This position collaborates closely with all team members including Operations Technicians, Program Management, Tooling, Maintenance, and Electricians to plan and execute projects.

Essential Responsibilities/Activities:

  • Plan and implement all automation equipment, controls, and associated tooling related activities/adjustments for the assembly area.
  • Collaborate with related teams and work groups to evaluate components, materials, and suppliers to assure proper implementation of projects.
  • Evaluates control systems, products, components, and applications while providing daily support to the Operations group to meet plant operational goals.
  • Confirms control system functionality, including appropriate safety compliance, by designing and/or executing test procedures.
  • Supports implementation and installation of new and rebuilt equipment.
  • Responsible for weld programming creation and/or verification of effectiveness to standards and efficiency of operations.
  • Creates systematic preventative maintenance plans for all equipment and associated tooling including applicable tools to evaluate and measure effectiveness.
  • Train Operations Technicians and create instructions to use and troubleshoot new equipment and associated tooling, along with preventative maintenance practices, proper execution, and tracking.
  • Support Quality department on customer issues by participating in problem solving teams and following procedures and corrective action assignments.
  • Review processes and procedures on an on-going basis for safety, quality, and production efficiency.
  • Maintain product and company reputation by complying with all government regulations, IATF 16949:2016 system requirements, and APQP standards.
  • Interpretation of equipment and tooling standards and process instructions applicable to duties performed.
  • Learn from and serve as a back-up to the Automation/Controls Engineer.
  • On call support as needed.
  • Demonstrated strong safety knowledge in OSHA and NFPA regulations, including Lock Out/Tag Out, Confined Space and Live Electric.
  • Competent in the use and application of PLC programming (logic) to assure all controls and equipment perform the functional duty as designed.

Preferred Skills and Education:

  • Associates/Technical Degree in related field required. Technical Certification with PLC or CNC Controls or computers, a plus.
  • 3-5 years of work experience in equipment implementation, robot programming, mig-welding, tooling, machine controls, & PLC programming, preferably in a production environment, and able to test, evaluate, implement, install, and trouble shoot all listed items.
  • Work experience in Allen Bradley PLC, Servo Controllers, HMI products and software.
  • Work experience in hydraulics, pneumatics, lube, and coolant systematic trouble shooting.
  • GMAW Welding Certification.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Elevated level of people skills to work effectively with technical as well as non-tech personnel.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a member of cross-functional team.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay attention to details and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to think logically under pressure.

Must have a desire to learn other various control and automation systems outside of the assembly area of the plant
