Role summary

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is seeking a Software Engineer Intern for its Information Technology Department. This 10-week paid internship in Alexandria, VA, offers a hybrid work environment. The intern will collaborate with software architects and the Cloud Infrastructure team to create secure, standardized cloud-based development environments using AWS, GCP, and/or Azure. Responsibilities include contributing to the software development process, utilizing tools like git, GitHub, GitHub Copilot, and Terraform, and working with data product engineers. Candidates must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a 4-year degree program, be at least a junior, and have familiarity with cloud platforms and software development, preferably in Python.

Who we are looking for:

ASCO’s Information Technology Department is seeking a Software Engineer Intern to collaborate within a fast-paced, agile environment and gain knowledge of Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure services and environments, and the skills required to create solutions in these environments.

Don't miss this chance to make a meaningful contribution working with staff and other interns in IT to create repeatable, secure, standardized cloud-based development environments for use by ASCO software engineers.

Internship activities include:

  • Collaborate with ASCO software architects on creating an ergonomic software development environment
  • Work with Cloud Infrastructure team on tracking and controlling software development costs
  • Learn and contribute to ASCO’s larger software development process, including agile ceremonies, code reviews, ticket grooming, daily standup and similar
  • Use git, GitHub, and GitHub Copilot, and Terraform in daily duties; and to enhance skills in the standard tools of modern software development
  • Collaborate with Data Product Engineers on a data set for daily use in software development

Required qualifications:

- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate BA/BS degree program, or graduate program, or recently graduated from a 4-year degree program.
*Candidates must be at least a junior or entering their junior year of college at the start of the internship.*
- Familiarity with Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, and/or Microsoft Azure
- Experience writing software, preferably Python
- Familiarity with git, bonus for GitHub
- Experience with the Microsoft Office Suite (365 preferred)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with flexibility to adapt to changing needs
- Solid organizational and time management skills and attention to detail
- Excellent customer service skills and professionalism
- Willingness to enhance skills

Duration:
10 weeks during the summer – June 8, 2026 to August 14, 2026. This internship is 37.5 hours per week.

Compensation:
This summer internship position is paid at a rate of $20/hour for actual hours worked. Additionally, ASCO will provide parking or a metro subsidy.

Location:
This internship is based in Alexandria, VA and will require working onsite the majority of the time with some offsite work flexibility. Candidates should reside in the D.C. metro area or be able to relocate at their own expense. If you are not able to work at ASCO Headquarters, please do not apply.
