Role summary
BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee's Corporate Applications team is hiring a Software Engineer to support Compliance, Finance, and Legal systems. This role involves working with a mix of SaaS and on-premise applications, requiring technical curiosity and ownership across a broad technology landscape. The engineer will partner with vendors and internal stakeholders, guiding solutions from problem statement to implementation. Responsibilities include formulating system scope, designing, coding, testing, debugging, and documenting programs. The role requires experience with ASP.NET, C#, Python, SQL Server, and APIs, along with strong data analysis and troubleshooting skills. While the position is remote, an onsite interview is required.
The Corporate Applications team at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee is seeking a Software Engineer to support Compliance, Finance, and Legal systems across a mix of vendor‑provided SaaS and on‑premise applications. This role is well suited for an engineer who is both technically curious and comfortable taking ownership, and who enjoys working across a broad technology landscape rather than a single product or framework. You’ll partner closely with vendors and internal stakeholders, contribute ideas, and help guide solutions from problem statement through implementation—developing your technical depth while building leadership through influence, collaboration, and accountability. Required Skills:
- Experience with ASP.NET, Visual Studio, C#, Python, and REST/SOAP APIs
- Proficiency with Microsoft SQL Server or other relational databases
- Experience with system integrations (APIs, file exchanges, e‑signatures, reporting, data storage)
- Strong data analysis, reporting, and troubleshooting skills
Preferred Skills:
- Experience leveraging AI‑assisted tools to capture requirements, document processes, generate technical artifacts (e.g., run books, user stories), and improve development efficiency
- Familiarity with applying AI or automation solutions to enhance workflows, data analysis, documentation, and decision‑making
- Ability to evaluate, validate, and govern AI‑generated outputs to ensure accuracy, security, and alignment with business and technical standards
Note:
- Sponsorship is not available for this role.
- An on‑call rotation is required once every third sprint, primarily during business hours, with occasional evening or weekend support for deployments, validations, or urgent production issues.
- While this position is remote, candidates selected for the final interview stage will be required to attend an onsite interview at our Chattanooga, TN headquarters.
Job Responsibilities
- Formulates and defines system scope and objectives through research and fact-finding to design, develop, modify, or integrate complex information systems.
- Devises or modifies application systems and procedures to optimize functional requirements including capacity, operating time, response time, and form of desired results.
- Designs, codes, tests, debugs, and documents programs, subroutines, and scripts.
- May serve one or more project team roles, such as project lead, business systems analyst, or technical lead, for small to medium efforts or manage phases of medium to large efforts.
- Maintains technical skill set for software languages, databases, platforms, operating systems, utilities and networks needed to support work assignments.
- Responds to system failures and performance events by taking appropriate measures to reduce system downtime and eliminate recurrence of problems.
- Regularly provides guidance and training to less-experienced analysts/programmers.
Job Qualifications
*Education*
- Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience required. Equivalent years of experience are determined as one year of technical experience for every year of college requested.
*Experience*
- 1 year - Experience with information technology concepts, application development methodology, terminology, and standards required
- 3 years - Systems and programming experience required
- 1 year - Expert working knowledge of at least one programming language in use at BCBST.
*Skills\Certifications*
- Proven skill with information technology in use at BCBST is required
- Proven analysis, design, and coding skills, and demonstrated success in leading large and complex projects
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and translate technical and/or or complex concepts into information meaningful to project team members and/or business personnel.
- Be organized, reliable, and able to manage multiple tasks with exceptional work ethic.
- Leadership skills
- Must be able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical co-workers
