Job Summary
The Director of Software Engineering is charged with leading and inspiring cross-functional teams in a dynamic Agile environment to address intricate business challenges with cutting-edge software solutions. This leadership role involves crafting and executing strategic visions for the design, development, testing, configuration, and deployment of superior software solutions. The director guides managers and software engineers to establish comprehensive test strategies, and architect robust cloud environments. A critical aspect of this position is ensuring that all software deliveries are secure, reliable, and highly automated, thereby driving innovation and operational excellence within financial technology systems. The director also collaborates with executive leadership to align technical strategies with overarching business objectives, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technological advancement.
Essential Job Functions
- Steer and refine the software development lifecycle to ensure the delivery of groundbreaking, scalable solutions. Partner with executive stakeholders to translate intricate business requirements into comprehensive technical strategies. Guide senior teams in crafting advanced design specifications and guarantee the delivery of robust, high-quality components. - (15%)
- Direct and oversee the formulation and implementation of exhaustive testing strategies to preemptively identify and resolve issues. Supervise code reviews to uncover and rectify defects, ensuring unwavering adherence to coding standards and best practices. Champion initiatives for continuous application enhancements to boost quality, efficiency, and user experience. - (15%)
- Lead the strategic design and development of major software solutions aligned with company goals. Ensure the successful delivery of projects, maintaining high standards of quality. Provide overarching technical leadership and foster collaboration with senior stakeholders to align on strategic objectives. - (15%)
- Spearhead initiatives to optimize system performance with cutting-edge technologies. Set and enforce high standards for code quality and testing practices. Lead teams in eliminating critical defects and enhancing scalability, establishing benchmarks for performance excellence. - (15%)
- Develop and oversee a comprehensive UI/UX strategy to deliver exceptional interfaces. Foster collaboration across departments to elevate user experiences, using insights to refine usability. Ensure teams have the expertise to achieve UI/UX excellence and meet business goals. - (15%)
- Enhance and fortify strategic relationships across engineering, product, and business divisions to amplify collaboration and operational efficiency. Provide strategic mentorship and constructive feedback to senior team members, both formally and informally. Utilize feedback to drive personal and team growth, elevating overall performance. - (15%)
- Demonstrate expertise in at least three or more programming languages, ideally three, and lead the development or maintenance of multiple mission-critical applications. Provide strategic technical supervision and mentorship to the team while demonstrating deep business acumen in financial technology and payments domains. - (10%)
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field of study; or equivalent experience.
- 10+ years of work experience in related field (Software Development Life Cycle across Full Stack, Frontend and Backend Development and UI / UX engineering).
- 7+ years of direct leadership experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related field of study; or equivalent experience.
- 12+ years of work experience in related field.
- 10+ years of direct leadership experience.

Work Environment
- Normal office environment. As a senior leader, must work at a Bread Financial office a minimum of 6 days per month. Ability to travel 6 days a month if not located near a Bread Financial office.

Salary Range (unless otherwise noted below):
$155,600.00 - $333,300.00
Full Salary Range for position:
California: $178,900.00 - $416,600.00
Colorado: $155,600.00 - $349,900.00
New York: $171,100.00 - $416,600.00
Washington: $163,300.00 - $383,300.00
Maryland: $163,300.00 - $366,600.00
Washington DC: $178,900.00 - $383,300.00
Illinois: $155,600.00 - $366,600.00
New Jersey: $178,900.00 - $383,300.00
Vermont: $155,600.00 - $333,300.00
Ohio: $155,600.00 - $333,300.00
*The actual base pay within this range may be dependent upon many factors, which may include, but are not limited to, work location, education, experience, and skills.*
Bread Financial offers medical, prescription drug, dental, vision, and other voluntary benefits (including basic and optional life insurance, supplemental medical plans, and short and long-term disability) to eligible associates (regular full-time associates scheduled to work 30 hours per week or more) and their spouses/domestic partners, and child(ren) under the age of 26. New associate elected coverage begins on date of hire (with the exception of disability coverage which has a 6-month waiting period). Six weeks of 100% paid parental leave for eligible parents is available after a 180-day waiting period. Hired associates can immediately enroll in Bread Financial’s 401(k) plan.
All associates receive 11 paid holidays. Associates have discretion in managing their time away from work through the Flexible Time Off (FTO) program and may need to notify and receive approval from their manager prior to taking the time off. Associates (except those located in Illinois) receive 80 hours of Paid Sick and Safe Time (“PSST”) upon hire and at the beginning of each subsequent calendar year. Illinois associates receive 40 hours of Illinois PSST upon hire and at the beginning of each subsequent calendar year and 40 hours of Illinois Paid Leave upon hire and at the beginning of each subsequent calendar year. Illinois Paid Leave must be used before associates in Illinois will be approved to take FTO.
Hired associates will be able to elect the purchase company stock during offering periods in June and December. You will be eligible for an annual incentive bonus based on individual and company performance.
