CarePortals is seeking a Lead Software Engineer for a full-time, remote position within a fast-growing SaaS startup. This role is a hands-on leadership position focused on shaping technical direction, scaling the platform, and contributing directly to delivery. The Lead Software Engineer will architect scalable, event-driven systems, mentor engineers, drive integrations, and establish best practices. The ideal candidate has 6+ years of full-stack web application experience, proficiency in NestJS, Angular/React, MongoDB, AWS, and event-driven architectures, and experience leading small teams in a fast-paced environment.

The opportunity
We’re looking for a
Lead Software Engineer
to help shape technical direction and strengthen our engineering team as CarePortals scales.
You’ll play a key role in shaping how we build, scale, and improve the platform while continuing to write code and contribute directly to delivery. You’ll work closely with the founding team to help shape and scale the systems powering modern telehealth experiences.
This is a highly hands-on leadership role, ideal for someone who loves building, solving complex problems, and bringing order to ambiguity in a fast-moving startup.
What you’ll work on
- Lead technical design and implementation across our tech stack
- Architect scalable, event-driven systems and ensure performance, reliability, and security
- Collaborate with the founding team on product strategy, technical roadmap, and key architecture decisions
- Mentor and support engineers through code reviews, pairing, and technical planning
- Drive integrations with EHRs, pharmacies, telehealth networks, and other third-party APIs
- Establish engineering best practices for CI/CD, testing, and documentation
- Balance hands-on coding with high-level technical leadership and delivery management
What we’re looking for
- 6+ years of experience
building and shipping full-stack web applications
- Proven experience leading small teams or projects in a startup or fast-paced environment
- Strong proficiency with
NestJS (Node.js), Angular/React, MongoDB, and AWS
- Experience with event-driven architectures (e.g., SQS, EventBridge, RabbitMQ)
- Familiarity with serverless and distributed systems design
- Excellent communication and leadership skills in a remote-first setting
- Comfortable working in a startup environment where priorities can move quickly
- Experience with SaaS platforms or
API-first products
- Strong judgment around technical tradeoffs, prioritization, and execution
Nice to have
- Familiarity with HIPAA, PHIPA, PIPEDA, or healthcare compliance
- Experience with EHR/EMR systems and integrations
- Experience with healthcare APIs (FHIR, eRx, labs, insurance billing)
- Strong bonus:
Relevant telehealth or digital health domain experience
