Role summary

The Landscaper – Horticulture Program Manager will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive horticulture program for the university's campus. This role involves hands-on landscaping tasks such as fertilizing, pesticide and herbicide application, and pest management, alongside program development and maintenance of turfgrass, shrubs, trees, and gardens. Key responsibilities include managing chemical inventories, procurement through vendor bidding, monitoring irrigation systems, and coordinating pest control measures. The position requires a TDA Pesticide Applicator License and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with a degree in Agronomy or Horticulture being preferred. This is an onsite, full-time role requiring physical capability and adherence to university policies.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

The Landscaper – Horticulture Program Manager assists with maintaining the outdoor campus by developing and implementing the university's comprehensive horticulture program for turfgrass, shrubs, trees, feature gardens, and seasonal color flower beds. The Landscaper – Horticulture Program Manager is responsible for performing landscaping tasks such as fertilizing, herbicide application, pesticide application, chemical inventory/procurement, mosquito and pest management. From time to time, standard landscaping tasks such as mowing, weed eating, and blowing, may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Must be proactive
  • Degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field preferred

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Head Supervisor and the Director of Landscaping in organizing and planning projects, routine maintenance, and irrigation schedules to align with the horticulture program
  • Develop, implement, and continually refine the campus-wide horticulture program for turfgrass, shrubs, trees, feature gardens, and seasonal color flower beds
  • Maintain a detailed chemical inventory, application records, and regulatory compliance documentation
  • Manage product procurement through competitive vendor bidding and cost analysis
  • Monitor and maintain three, irrigation pump-station fertigation systems
  • Understand and evaluate active ingredients and identify cost-effective generic alternatives when appropriate
  • Assist the Director of Landscaping with budget planning for chemical and equipment procurement and long-range planning for campus landscape development
  • Coordinate and maintain records of soil and irrigation water testing twice annually
  • Monitor campus conditions for plant health issues, pests, and environmental concerns
  • Coordinate mosquito, cricket, beaver, snake, and fungal control measures across the main campus
  • Monitor wildlife impacts to landscape areas and coordinate with pest control contractors as needed
  • Assist with general grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing, trimming, debris removal, snow/ice removal, and trash pickup as needed
  • Rye grass overseeding coordination and implementation
  • Perform daily chores and checks
  • Perform others duties as assigned.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Regular hours between 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday - Friday but regularly flexible hours will be required.

WORK LOCATION:

This position will work on the main campus, located at 3000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX 75211

Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a current Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) Pesticide Applicator License (Commercial or Noncommercial)
  • Must be able to perform the essential physical functions of the position, including lifting and carrying bags of granular fertilizer weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to safely operate landscaping equipment including, tactors, utility vehicles, sprayers, skid-steers, and related attachments
