This position focuses on implementing, integrating, and supporting Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and other critical healthcare applications within the correctional system. Responsibilities include system build, testing, go-live support, maintenance of health IT infrastructure, troubleshooting EMR issues, and ensuring data interoperability. The role requires 7+ years of experience with EMR systems (preferably NextGen), Mirth Lab Systems, EMR integration, healthcare interoperability, and IT operations. Job Overview

The South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) is seeking an experienced IT Healthcare Consultant – Software Engineer / Project Lead to support healthcare technology initiatives within the Division of Technology.

This role will focus on the implementation, integration, and support of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and other healthcare applications, ensuring reliable health IT operations that support medical and mental healthcare services.

The consultant will work closely with vendors, clinicians, and technical teams to implement, maintain, and optimize healthcare systems including EHR, Lab Information Systems, PACS, Pharmacy systems, and interoperability interfaces.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation, build, testing, and go-live of healthcare applications and technologies including EHR, lab systems, PACS, and pharmacy systems.
  • Work with vendors, clinical staff, and IT teams to ensure successful system deployment and operation.
  • Maintain and support health IT infrastructure, including applications, templates, databases, and reporting tools.
  • Troubleshoot EMR-related issues, perform triage, escalation, and provide root cause analysis.
  • Support integration and interoperability across healthcare systems.
  • Create reports and analytics for management and system users.
  • Document and analyze current workflows for medical and mental health providers.
  • Assist in maintaining interfaces and data transfer between healthcare systems.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems, preferably NextGen.
  • 7+ years of experience with Mirth Lab Systems.
  • 7+ years of EMR Integration experience.
  • 7+ years of experience with interoperability and healthcare data transfer.
  • 7+ years of Healthcare IT Operations experience.
  • Strong experience supporting healthcare technology environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with HL7 Messaging.
  • Experience with FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources).
  • Experience working with State Government or Public Sector agencies.

Work Environment

The Division of Technology at SCDC leverages modern technology to support the agency’s mission and improve healthcare services within the correctional system. The Health Technology & Informatics branch manages the agency’s Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems and healthcare technology infrastructure.

This role provides the opportunity to work on critical healthcare technology systems that improve care delivery and operational efficiency.
