Role summary

Seeking a Backend & Cloud Software Engineer with Azure Cloud and .NET expertise to build secure, scalable backend services and microservices for an extended reality (XR) platform. This role involves developing APIs, managing cloud infrastructure in Azure Government Cloud (AKS, App Services, Azure SQL), implementing containerized solutions with Docker, and ensuring DoD compliance for authentication and security principles. Responsibilities include developing CI/CD pipelines, monitoring systems, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to modernize training and maintenance workflows in Navy environments. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of software development experience and a strong understanding of secure system design.

Backend & Cloud Software Engineer (Azure Cloud / .NET)
Role Overview
You will be a core engineer building the backend, cloud services, and integration layers that power TRANSFORM—an extended reality (XR) platform modernizing training, maintenance, and inspection workflows. This role focuses on secure, scalable backend development, microservice architecture, and Azure Cloud deployment. You will work closely with XR developers, data engineers, cybersecurity specialists, and stakeholders to deliver a production‑ready system capable of operating in controlled DoD environments.
This position is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of cloud engineering, secure system design, and real‑world operational impact.
Key Responsibilities
Backend & API Development

  • Build and maintain backend services using .NET Standard / .NET Core supporting customer workflows, document ingestion, OQE data capture, and real‑time performance tracking.
  • Design and implement API-first services for integration, logistics systems, digital instrumentation vendors, and legacy systems.
  • Develop secure data models
  • Implement automated formatting and transmission of maintenance documentation (JSON, YAML, TXT, Navy‑specific formats).

Cloud Architecture & Microservices

  • Architect and deploy microservices in Azure Government Cloud, including AKS, App Services, Azure SQL, Redis Cache, and Storage Accounts.
  • Build containerized services using Docker, with secure image management and automated deployment pipelines.
  • Implement event-driven and real-time data flows for instrumentation, spatial scanning, and OQE validation.

Security & Compliance

  • Implement DoD‑compliant authentication (MFA/SSO, identity federation, CAC/PKI integration).
  • Apply zero-trust principles, least-privilege access, and secure API design across all services.
  • Support system hardening and preparation for deployment into Navy shipyard environments.

DevOps & Operations

  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps, including automated testing, security scanning, and deployment to GovCloud.
  • Implement monitoring and observability using Azure Monitor, App Insights, and log aggregation tools.
  • Support incident response, performance tuning, and operational readiness for a multi‑platform XR ecosystem.

Collaboration & Integration

  • Work with XR developers to ensure backend services support spatialized data
  • Collaborate with vendors to integrate disparate systems through API calls.
  • Participate in stakeholder demos, usability evaluations, and iterative refinement cycles.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong experience with C#, .NET Core, .NET Standard, and RESTful API development.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure Cloud, ideally including:
  • Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)
  • Azure App Services / Functions
  • Azure SQL & Storage Accounts
  • Azure Key Vault
  • Azure Communication Services
  • Proficiency with Docker and containerized microservice architecture.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps preferred).
  • Experience with authentication/authorization frameworks (OAuth2, OpenID Connect, SSO, MFA).
  • Strong understanding of secure data transmission, serialization formats, and API interoperability.
  • Ability to work in an agile, iterative development environment with cross-functional teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree - Computer Science, Computer Engineering
  • 5 or more years of experience in Software Development

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience deploying to Azure Cloud or other IL4/IL5 environments.
  • Experience building secure systems aligned with NIST 800‑171, NIST 800‑53, or other regulated frameworks.
  • Background integrating with legacy enterprise systems or logistics platforms.

Impact of the Role
Your work will directly support the modernization of Navy shipyards, enabling maintainers to learn, practice, and execute complex procedures with higher accuracy, reduced rework, and improved readiness. You will help build a secure, scalable platform that bridges XR technology with real-world industrial operations—impacting both defense and commercial sectors.
