Role summary

Feanix, a seed-stage YC startup, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Full-Stack & Data) to drive the development of sustainable agriculture solutions. The role involves scaling the product to support a significant increase in dairy farms and expanding to other livestock and crop species within the next 12 months. The engineer will collaborate on technical vision, lead system design and implementation, improve engineering processes, and focus on customer needs. Key requirements include strong Python skills with scientific libraries, robust system design fundamentals, experience with cloud/serverless infrastructure, data processing pipelines, and full-stack development in Typescript. A desire to learn about dairy farming, animal genetics, and farm economics is essential.

# About Us

Feanix is a seed-stage YC startup with a deep passion for making the agriculture industry more sustainable. Our investors include [Initialized Capital](https://initialized.com/) (lead) with participation from General Catalyst, Collab Fund, Overwater Ventures, YC, and an amazing set of angels.

Our mission is to bridge the gap between ecology and agriculture, ensuring both can thrive for generations to come. To do so, we are pioneering the use of cutting-edge genetics + software advancements in commercial farming operations.

We’ve started in the dairy sector as our co-founders [Mitch](https://www.linkedin.com/in/mitchell-angove-044b53163/) and [Tom](https://www.linkedin.com/in/tom-bishop-phd-64253a280/) both grew up on dairy farms and met at an animal genetics research lab in UC Davis. However, genetics is a core pillar of every agricultural industry, from chickens to plant crops. We’re just getting started.

### Some of our proprietary breakthroughs:

* We can perform DNA extraction and whole-genome sequencing from a single hair at dramatically lower cost vs. status quo.
* We are the first Genotype-By-Sequencing lab certified with the [CDCB](https://redmine.uscdcb.com/projects/cdcb-customer-service/wiki/Approved_CDCB_Genotyping_Laboratories#Feanix-Biotechnologies-Inc).
* We’ve developed custom genomic models that achieve \~90+% reliability on various phenotypic traits vs. the industry standard of \~60% reliability.
* We’re the first to crack genomic predictions on traits like lactation persistency.

# The Role

We are seeking a strong, versatile engineer that is energized by creating the next generation of efficient+sustainable agriculture.

* Over the next 5 months, we need to scale the product from 5 to 50+ dairy farms (from 1,000s to 100,000s of cows under management).
* Over the next 12 months, we need to ensure the product can scale to 100s of dairy farms and begin to expand to other livestock and crop species.

### What You’ll Do

* Collaborate on our technical vision. Lead system design and implementation of multiple complex projects
* Continuously improve our engineering processes, tools, and systems that allow us to scale the code base, productivity, and the team
* Obsess over the customer. Join farm visits and ensure the product is solving the right problems for the customer

### What You’ll Need

* Ability to create clarity and “make the playbook” despite high ambiguity
* Desire to work in a fast-paced environment and rapidly upskill on dairy farming, animal genetics, bioinformatics, and farm economics
* High standard of care (we are responsible for decisions that affect millions of dollars of farm revenue)
* Excellent Python skills and experience with scientific libs (polars/pandas, numpy, scipy, etc.)
* Strong system design fundamentals and familiarity with cloud/serverless infra
* Experience building robust data processing pipelines
* Experience with full-stack development in Typescript

### Nice to Haves

* Passion for agriculture/ecology
* Statistics and machine learning fundamentals
* Previous bioinformatics experience
* Previous experience with the dairy industry
