About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Manager Software Engineering 2 to join our dynamic team based out of Huntsville, AL. This leadership role involves overseeing a team of engineers, managing software development projects, and ensuring the successful delivery of software solutions aligned with customer needs and organizational goals. The manager will be responsible for day-to-day team management, strategic planning, and program execution, particularly focusing on the development and implementation of software updates for the Space Systems Missile Defense Integration (MDI) Business Unit Program. The role combines approximately 25% management responsibilities with 75% program-related tasks, requiring a balanced approach to leadership and technical expertise. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams, senior leadership, and external stakeholders to drive technical excellence and operational efficiency.
Qualifications
Applicants should possess a minimum of 8 years of experience with a Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering or a related STEM discipline, or 6 years with a Master's degree, or 4 years with a PhD. Proven expertise in developing software using object-oriented programming languages such as C, C++, or Java is essential. Candidates must have experience analyzing complex problems and devising effective solutions within Linux-based development environments. An active secret clearance is required for this role. Prior experience in technical and people leadership roles, along with a solid understanding of staffing, engineering metrics, and resource management, is highly preferred. Business acumen, customer interface skills, and the ability to manage large teams and projects are critical for success. Demonstrated experience in issue resolution, resource planning, and strategic thinking will be advantageous. A strong commitment to ethics, integrity, and fostering inclusive teams is essential.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development and advancement of engineering practices, identifying skill gaps and recruiting top talent, including interns and college graduates, to enhance engineering capabilities.
- Provide effective leadership to achieve sustainable top performance, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
- Maintain strong communication channels and build collaborative relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure alignment and project success.
- Uphold high standards of ethics and integrity, challenging traditional approaches and promoting innovative solutions.
- Develop and nurture diverse, inclusive teams with high engagement levels through mentoring, coaching, and professional development initiatives.
- Balance interpersonal, technical, and business skills to manage project deliverables and team performance effectively.
- Operate within a team environment, collaborating across disciplines and organizational levels to meet project objectives.
- Prioritize tasks and adjust project plans to deliver results with limited oversight, ensuring timely and quality outcomes.
- Apply systems thinking to develop scalable, maintainable software that meets user needs and supports long-term sustainability.
- Work closely with directors, managers, product managers, and senior leadership to align engineering efforts with organizational goals.
- Champion organizational change initiatives to maintain a competitive edge and improve operational efficiency.
- Support proposal development, review, and approval processes to secure new business opportunities.
- Develop and execute strategic plans, including multi-year sales and marketing strategies, to identify key markets and growth opportunities.
- Create and implement marketing and communication plans to promote project initiatives and organizational strengths.
- Provide regular updates to senior management on program statuses, major opportunities, and progress toward strategic goals.
