Role summary
Raytheon is seeking an Automation Systems Engineer for its Industry 4.0 - Connected Factory Intelligence & Automation organization. This role involves designing, developing, and implementing advanced automation solutions for manufacturing processes, integrating physical systems (robots, PLCs, HMIs, vision systems) with business systems, primarily using Ignition software. Responsibilities include identifying automation opportunities, collaborating with stakeholders, providing technical leadership, conducting system validation, and troubleshooting production systems. The position requires on-site presence, U.S. citizenship, and the ability to obtain a Secret security clearance. A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience or 5 years with a Master's degree is required.

About The Role
Raytheon is seeking a highly skilled Automation Systems Engineer to join our Industry 4.0 - Connected Factory Intelligence & Automation (CFIA) organization. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the design, development, and implementation of advanced automation solutions that enhance manufacturing processes. As part of this team, you will be instrumental in integrating physical automation systems such as robots, PLCs, HMIs, and vision systems with business systems, primarily utilizing Ignition software. Your role will involve collaborating with cross-functional teams to identify automation opportunities, develop innovative solutions, and ensure seamless integration and operation of automation technologies. This position requires on-site presence at our Tucson facility, with responsibilities spanning from system design and validation to troubleshooting and technical leadership, providing ample growth opportunities in applications development, control systems, and project management.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in automation engineering or a related field, or at least 5 years with a relevant Master’s degree in Engineering. A strong background in control systems integration, including actuators, sensors, robotics, and vision systems, is essential. Experience with PLC and HMI programming, preferably Rockwell, and robotics programming, particularly Fanuc, is required. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to manage medium to complex automation projects and possess a U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain an active U.S. government-issued Secret security clearance prior to employment. Prior security clearance or interim clearance is a prerequisite for this role.
Responsibilities
- Identify and evaluate opportunities for automation within manufacturing processes, including assembly, inspection, testing, and logistics.
- Collaborate with factory and program stakeholders to document system requirements and project specifications.
- Provide technical leadership for automation projects, guiding design, development, and implementation efforts both internally and with external suppliers.
- Design and integrate control software and hardware components, including PLCs, robotics, vision systems, sensors, and actuators, to develop or upgrade automation solutions.
- Conduct system validation testing to ensure compliance with acceptance and production standards.
- Offer troubleshooting and debugging support for production systems to maintain operational efficiency.
- Contribute to shaping the manufacturing technology strategy aligned with company objectives and industry best practices.
