Role summary

We are seeking a Lead Engineering Technician in San Diego to support the development, integration, testing, and operation of complex electromechanical systems. This role requires a versatile individual comfortable with both mechanical and electrical systems, hands-on problem-solving, and thriving in a fast-paced R&D environment. You will collaborate with engineers and cross-functional teams to build, troubleshoot, optimize, and improve cutting-edge prototype and production systems. Hourly Pay: $33–$40

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly capable, detail-oriented, and versatile Engineering Technician to support the development, integration, testing, and operation of complex electromechanical systems.

The ideal candidate is equally comfortable working with sophisticated mechanical assemblies and advanced electrical systems, enjoys hands-on technical problem solving, and thrives in a fast-paced, innovative engineering and R&D environment where priorities can evolve quickly. You will work closely with talented engineers and cross-functional teams to build, troubleshoot, optimize, and improve cutting-edge prototype and production systems.

This is a highly collaborative and impactful role requiring strong technical judgment, adaptability, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to independently drive complex technical issues through resolution.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble, integrate, test, troubleshoot, and maintain advanced electromechanical systems, prototypes, and laboratory equipment

  • Support the development and scaling of innovative instrumentation, automation, and hardware systems

  • Read and interpret detailed mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation

  • Perform precision mechanical assembly, fabrication, modification, and system integration work

  • Build and wire sophisticated electrical systems including sensors, motors, actuators, control panels, harnesses, and instrumentation

  • Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, and system-level issues during development and testing

  • Support engineering experiments, validation activities, and data collection efforts with accuracy and efficiency

  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering and cross-functional teams to improve system reliability, manufacturability, and performance

  • Assist with equipment installation, calibration, maintenance, and commissioning activities

  • Develop and improve assembly procedures, technical documentation, and lab/shop organization

  • Help establish scalable best practices for prototype builds and engineering operations

  • Maintain a safe, organized, and high-functioning laboratory and workshop environment

  • Effectively manage shifting priorities and contribute to multiple concurrent projects in a dynamic environment

Qualifications

  • A BS/BA with 5 years or Associate Degree with 8 years of experience or a technical certification, or equivalent practical experience in Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Electronics, Mechanical Technology, or a related technical field

  • 5+ years of relevant hands-on technical experience in engineering, manufacturing, laboratory, or R&D environment

  • Strong electromechanical troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities

  • Experience with mechanical assembly and electrical wiring/integration

  • Ability to read and work from engineering drawings, schematics, and technical documentation

  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, multimeters, and standard lab/shop equipment

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-moving, team-oriented environment

Preferred

  • Experience supporting R&D hardware development and rapid prototype iteration

  • Experience with precision soldering, cable fabrication, and connector assembly

  • Experience with sensors, pneumatics, pumps, valves, and instrumentation systems

  • Familiarity with automation systems, robotics, motion systems, or fluidic systems

  • Basic machining, fabrication, or CAD (SolidWorks) experience

  • Experience in biotech, life sciences, medical device, or other highly technical, regulated industries
