Fulcrum Concepts is seeking a Technical Writer or Junior Technical Writer for their Technical Publications team in Mattaponi, VA. The writer will collaborate with engineers and other SMEs, create visual content, and utilize XML-based authoring tools. POSITION SUMMARY
The Technical Writer develops and maintains technical publications supporting Fulcrum's aerospace and defense products. Working closely with engineers, pilots, mechanics, and other subject matter experts, this role creates clear, accurate documentation that supports the operation and maintenance of customer systems while ensuring compliance with applicable customer requirements, industry standards, and technical publication specifications.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Core Competency: Technical Documentation Development
- Research, write, edit, and maintain technical publications supporting aerospace and defense products, including technical manuals, operating procedures, maintenance instructions, troubleshooting guides, training materials, reports, and customer deliverables
- Develop clear, accurate, and user-focused content from engineering drawings, technical data packages, specifications, test data, and other source documentation
- Coordinate the development of supporting illustrations, figures, tables, photographs, and other visual content to enhance user understanding
Core Competency: Technical Data Collection & Validation
- Gather and validate technical information through collaboration with engineers, pilots, mechanics, armament technicians, and other subject matter experts
- Review technical content for accuracy, completeness, consistency, and compliance with program requirements
- Participate in technical reviews and incorporate stakeholder feedback into final deliverables
Core Competency: Standards & Compliance
- Develop documentation in accordance with applicable customer requirements, industry standards, military specifications, and aviation regulations
- Support the development and maintenance of Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs), Interactive Electronic Technical Publications (IETPs), and other structured technical content
- Ensure publications meet established formatting, configuration management, quality, and documentation standards
Core Competency: Publication Tools and Process Support
- Utilize XML-based authoring tools, publishing systems, and common source databases to create and maintain technical content
- Support continuous improvement of technical publication processes, templates, and documentation practices
- Collaborate with Technical Publications team members to meet program schedules and deliver high-quality products on time

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift light loads as necessary
- Ability to operate in a clerical setting, routinely using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, etc.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment with an emphasis on flexibility and adaptability
- Bachelor’s degree in Technical Communication, English, Engineering, Aviation, or a related field required; equivalent education, training, or professional experience in a closely related field may be considered in lieu of a degree
- *For consideration of a Technical Writer role, the below requirements are expected:*
- 3-5 years of technical writing experience
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, CAD software (Solidworks, CATIA, or comparable), Adobe Acrobat, XML Editor (Eagle Publishing System, oXygen, Arbortext, or comparable), and other applications for Interactive Electronic Manuals and desktop publishing
- Basic technical understanding of aviation and armament technology
- Experience authoring in accordance with S1000D and/or MIL-STDs
- *For consideration of a Jr. Technical Writer, the below requirements are expected:*
- 0-3 years of technical writing or related experience
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and a willingness to learn CAD software, XML authoring, and other applications for Interactive Electronic Manuals and desktop publishing
- Familiarity with structured editing concepts and/or a willingness to learn S1000D and MIL-STDs
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
- Experience developing technical publications for aerospace, aviation, defense, or other highly regulated industries
- Knowledge of military, commercial aviation, or government technical publication standards and specifications
- Experience authoring or maintaining structured technical content using XML-based publishing systems (e.g., Eagle Publishing System, oXygen, Arbortext, or comparable)
- Familiarity with Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs) and Interactive Electronic Technical Publications (IETPs)
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical data packages, bills of material, and related source documentation
- Experience collaborating with engineers, maintainers, operators, or other technical subject matter experts
SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENT
Subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. A SECRET, TS, or TS/SCI clearance may be required
Pay: $31.17 - $37.54 per hour
