Role summary

Google DeepMind is seeking a Software Engineer for the Gemini on Watches team to enhance voice interaction on wearable devices using Large Language Models (LLMs). This role involves designing and building user interfaces, developing backend logic and APIs for LLM integration, and implementing multimodal experiences. The engineer will optimize full-stack performance, ensure data privacy and security, and troubleshoot system issues. The position requires a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, with 2 years of full-stack development experience (Java, Kotlin, Android) and 2 years of API design experience with protocol buffers. Experience with wearable devices is also required. Preferred qualifications include a Master's or PhD, experience with Text-to-Speech services, audio processing, and integrating LLMs or Generative AI into consumer applications.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience with full stack development, across back-end such as Java, Kotlin and Android development.
  • 2 years of experience with API design and protocol buffers.
  • Experience working on wearable devices.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical fields.
  • Experience integrating Text-to-Speech (TTS) services or handling audio processing within an application.
  • Experience implementing and integrating Large Language Models (LLMs) or Generative AI APIs into consumer-facing applications.
  • A demonstrated track record of utilizing AI tools to enhance software development workflows.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $147,000-$211,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Design and build responsive, interactive watch user interfaces optimized for clear LLM response navigation across various watch models, working closely with UI/UX teams.
  • Develop and maintain robust backend logic and APIs to process, adapt, and integrate LLM models with contextual services for efficient delivery to resource-constrained wearables.
  • Implement multimodal and connected experiences, including accurate text-to-speech functionality for watch displays and the ability to control other connected devices directly from the watch.
  • Optimize full-stack performance for fast response times, ensure strict data privacy and security practices, and actively monitor systems to troubleshoot issues and improve the user experience.
