
Staff Software Engineer, Server Software
Role summary
Google is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for its Server Software team. This role involves designing, developing, and optimizing firmware and software for Google's custom-designed server fleet at a global scale. Responsibilities include system board bring-up, diagnostics implementation, performance evaluation, and reliability assurance. The engineer will also provide technical direction and mentor other engineers. The position requires extensive experience in software development, testing, embedded operating systems, and software design, with a strong background in Linux, C++, and embedded systems. Preferred qualifications include experience in technical leadership and working within global organizations.
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
- 8 years of experience in software development.
- 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products.
- 5 years of experience working with embedded operating systems.
- 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.
- Experience in Linux, C++, Shell Scripting, Python, Operating Systems, Embedded Systems, GPU Drivers, Firmware, Linux Kernel, Reliability, and Leadership.
Preferred qualifications:
- Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
- 8 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.
- 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
- 3 years of experience working in a global organization involving cross-functional, or cross-business projects.
- Experience in Computer Architecture, Bootloaders, Continuous Build, Continuous Deployment, Continuous Test, and GPUs/ML accelerators.

The Server Software team is responsible for designing and developing the firmware and software to bring up and run Google's custom designed Servers, Appliances, Switches and supporting these at scale in the fleet. We work closely with many partner teams within and outside of Platforms Infrastructure Engineering (PIE).

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $207,000-$300,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities
- Leverage expertise in computer architecture, Basic Input/Output System (BIOS), firmware, and kernel development to power and optimize a global-scale server fleet.
- Lead the design, development, testing, and deployment of the software solutions, managing project priorities and deliverables in a fluid environment.
- Drive early-stage system board bring-up and issue triage by implementing automated tools for diagnostics, performance evaluation, and reliability assurance.
- Partner with internal and external stakeholders to execute engineering programs, focusing on product development and fleet productivity.
- Provide technical direction for critical projects while mentoring engineers to elevate the overall quality of team engineering standards.
