Role summary

Google is seeking a Software Engineer III specializing in Flume ML to develop and enhance large-scale ML infrastructure. This role involves designing, testing, deploying, and maintaining software solutions, with a focus on optimizing Flume pipelines for ML workloads. The engineer will analyze performance traces, produce impact analyses for optimization ideas, and collaborate with technical leads and ML platform teams. The position requires a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, with a minimum of 2 years in software development or 1 year with an advanced degree, and experience with backend and distributed systems. Preferred qualifications include experience with ML infrastructure, Google's internal systems, C++, and system design.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages, or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree.
  • Experience with backend and distributed systems.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical fields.
  • Experience with ML infrastructure (e.g., model deployment, model evaluation, optimization, data processing, debugging).
  • Experience with Google infrastructure (e.g., MapReduce, Flume, Colossus, Stubby, etc.).
  • Proficiency programming in C++, large scale data processing, systems infrastructure, and system design.
  • Familiarity with large-scale distributed systems or infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML or Large Language Models (LLMs).

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $147,000-$211,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and enhance software solutions while managing project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables.
  • Collect application/ML model performance traces and analyze for performance optimization opportunities.
  • Produce impact analysis of proposed optimization ideas.
  • Land the optimizations to Flume pipelines specific to large ML workloads.
  • Work with Flume ML's Technical Lead and ML platform teams on integration and roll out of optimizations.
