Role summary

Google is seeking a Senior Software Engineer specializing in Offensive Security to join their team. This role involves conducting realistic offensive security exercises to test and enhance detection and response capabilities, identify vulnerabilities, and simulate advanced adversary tactics. The engineer will develop tools and infrastructure, design security improvements, and document/present findings to diverse audiences. The position requires a strong background in software development, security software development, and offensive security practices, with a focus on identifying and emulating sophisticated attack methods to strengthen Google's overall security posture.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages.
  • 3 years of experience building software for data privacy or security (e.g., identity and access management).
  • 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products.
  • 1 year of experience with software design and architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 5 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.
  • 1 year of experience in a technical leadership role.
  • Experience with software development in C++, Go, or Python.
  • Experience in pen testing or red teaming.
  • Experience developing accessible technologies.

In this role, you will perform realistic offensive security exercises to simulate real attacks, to test and improve our detection and response capabilities, and identify how attackers could infiltrate and move inside our infrastructure. With your technical expertise, you will come up with scenarios that advanced adversaries might try to compromise our security, and execute these attacks in a safe manner and in accordance with our rules of engagement. You will emulate the techniques used by known hacker groups, and come up with new techniques that adversaries might attempt in the future. You will thoroughly document any findings, and present the results to colleagues as well as leadership.
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $174,000-$252,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Work with a team of highly skilled hackers to plan and lead realistic offensive security exercises.
  • Build tools and infrastructure to support our exercises.
  • Design controls and improvements to sharpen our capabilities to defend against attackers in close cooperation with the teams responsible for implementing them.
  • Document and present results to a variety of audiences, ranging from highly technical engineers over non-technical subject matter experts to executive leadership.
