Role summary

Google is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to design, build, and operate large-scale distributed storage systems for BigQuery Managed Storage. This role involves developing next-generation technologies that handle information at massive scale, extending beyond web search. The engineer will work on critical projects, potentially switching teams and projects as the business evolves. Key responsibilities include designing and implementing storage components, developing tests and experiments for performance evaluation, and utilizing a full suite of tools for development and rollout. The position requires a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, with preferred qualifications including advanced degrees and experience with data lakes and distributed computing.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed storage systems.
  • 3 years of experience developing distributed databases.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 8 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.
  • Experience with data lakes such as Apache Iceberg.
  • Experience with distributed computing.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $207,000-$300,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Design and implement storage components to support large-scale data processing for both Operational Support Systems (OSS) and BigQuery.
  • Design and implement tests and experiments to evaluate and monitor the performance of the system.
  • Use the full battery of tools and instrumentation to develop, test, and rollout features.
  • Coordinate with product engineers, Program Managers (PM) and customers to grow the business.
