About The Branch
The Wildland Fire Management (WFM) branch contributes to the protection of people, property and the development of sustainable, fire resilient Yukon communities and infrastructure. WFM directly maintains and oversees the safe training and operational practices, and values natural ecological processes to ensure operational efficiency within the territory.
About The Job
This position supports incident preparedness and response in the Yukon through maintaining weather and wildfire databases, stewardship of data sets including development of climatological and engineering products enabling the Government of Yukon to service high quality atmospheric monitoring data to internal and external users. This role is responsible for developing and maintaining tools to support all aspects of weather forecasting and wildfire management.

• Education in meteorology, environmental science, data science or a related field, or a combination of education and experience.
• Experience working in wildfire (preferred), emergency management or other stressful and time-sensitive applications.
• Experience using weather and wildfire databases to interpret data, generate reports, and conduct research.
• Experience identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving technical issues related to data systems and tools, often under tight deadlines.
• Experience communicating technical information to a variety of technical and non-technical end users.
• Completion of the S490 Fire behavior training course is considered an asset.

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.
Desired Knowledge, Skills And Suitability
Candidates should have and may be assessed on:

• Experience working as a wildland firefighter, Fire Behaviour Analyst or other role within the Operations or Planning Section of an incident management team.
• Training and experience in using the Incident Command System (ICS).
• In-depth knowledge of hydrometeorological data, including instrument calibration, data accuracy, and the standards for weather stations and climatic data sets.
• Education in meteorology, wildfire science, environmental science, data science or a related field.
• Experience with creating climatology and engineering data products, utilizing statistical methods and best practices for their development.
• Knowledge of national and international standards for weather data collection, including best practices for quality control and long-term data stewardship.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Additional Information

• Conditions of Employment: Valid Yukon Class 5 driver’s licence.
• Job Requirements: Willingness to travel to locations within the Yukon is a requirement of this position.
