Role summary

Hygo is seeking a Data Engineer to own and manage the data layer for their AI-powered media platform, which processes millions of AI generation jobs monthly. The ideal candidate will have 4+ years of experience as a database engineer, DBA, or backend engineer with a deep SQL focus, particularly expert knowledge of PostgreSQL, ORM experience (Prisma preferred), and familiarity with connection pooling and database security. This is a critical role impacting a platform reaching 250 million people monthly.

🌍
We're Hiring: Data Engineer (Database & Backend) @ Hygo

Hygo reaches 250 million people every month
with original video content built around the things people are passionate about. We're not a tech company that dabbles in media — we're a global media company processing millions of AI generation jobs every month, and the data layer is what makes it all hold together.

We're looking for a
Data Engineer
who lives in the query planner, thinks in schemas, and takes genuine pride in a migration that ships without a single second of downtime.

🗄️ What You'll Work On

This is a depth role — you'll own the data layer for one of the most complex domain models in AI-powered media.

Own the data layer for a platform processing millions of AI generation jobs monthly across a rich, complex domain model → Design and optimize the PostgreSQL schema — currently managed via Prisma with role-based access control across app and migration roles → Write and review migrations with zero-downtime deployment in mind: idempotent DDL, safe rollbacks, no surprises in production → Profile and optimize slow queries across job queuing, billing lookups, user dashboards, and admin analytics → Implement and maintain data integrity patterns: constraints, triggers, audit trails, and soft deletes → Support the team on complex queries for reporting, admin tooling, and analytics features → Advise on scaling strategy as user and job volume grows — partitioning, read replicas, connection pooling tuning

✅ What We're Looking For

  • 4+ years as a database engineer, DBA, or backend engineer with a deep SQL focus
  • Expert PostgreSQL knowledge — query planning (EXPLAIN ANALYZE), indexing strategies, partitioning, JSONB, CTEs, window functions
  • Production ORM experience (Prisma preferred, or Sequelize/TypeORM/Drizzle) — and the judgment to know when to drop to raw SQL
  • Strong understanding of connection pooling (PgBouncer or similar), managed database services, and replication
  • Proven experience with zero-downtime migration strategies on live production databases
  • Familiarity with role-based database security — restricted DML-only app roles vs. DDL admin roles
  • Bonus: Redis data modeling, time-series data, full-text search (pg\_trgm), PostGIS ✨

🛠 Tech Stack

PostgreSQL · Prisma ORM · Redis 7 · Node.js · NestJS · TypeScript · DigitalOcean Managed Database

💰 Compensation

  • $120,000 – $140,000 base salary, depending on experience

Why Hygo?

You'll own the data layer that underpins everything — every AI job, every billing event, every creator dashboard, every analytics report. This isn't a support role. It's a seat at the table at a company reaching a quarter-billion people every month, where your schema decisions have real consequences and real impact.
