Role summary

Initiate Government Solutions (IGS), a Woman-Owned Small Business and fully remote IT services provider, is seeking a Midlevel Software Engineer to support federal partners. The role focuses on designing, developing, and maintaining software for Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems within a cloud-based AWS environment. Responsibilities include implementing backend services and APIs, participating in the full software development lifecycle, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring secure, scalable healthcare applications. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams, adhere to healthcare compliance (HIPAA), and follow cloud security and cost-optimization standards. This is a remote position requiring 5+ years of experience in software development, particularly with EHR or healthcare systems, and AWS experience.

IGS is currently recruiting a remote Midlevel Software Engineer to support our work with our state customer.

Assignment of Work and Travel:

This is a remote access assignment. The Candidate will work remotely daily and will remotely access customer systems and therein use approved IGS/customer provided communications systems. Travel is not required; however, the candidate may be required to attend onsite client meetings as requested.

The Midlevel Software Engineer will contribute to the design, development, enhancement, and support of software applications that support Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems in a cloud-based environment. This role focuses on building reliable, secure, and scalable healthcare applications while collaborating with senior engineers, architects, and cross-functional teams. The engineer will work within AWS environments and support healthcare data integrations while adhering to regulatory and security requirements.

Responsibilities and Duties (Included but not limited to):

  • Design, develop, and maintain software components supporting EHR platforms and healthcare workflows.
  • Implement backend services, APIs, and application features under the guidance of senior engineers and architects.
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including design, coding, testing, deployment, and production support.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve application defects and performance issues.
  • Develop and deploy applications in AWS environments using cloud-native services and best practices.
  • Assist with application monitoring, logging, and performance optimization in cloud environments.
  • Follow established cloud security and cost-optimization standards.
  • Support integrations between EHR systems and other applications, reporting platforms, or external systems.
  • Apply secure coding practices and follow healthcare compliance requirements, including HIPAA.
  • Support documentation and audit requirements related to application functionality and security.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including QA, DevOps, database teams, and business stakeholders.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation such as design notes, code comments, and support guides.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience with EHR or healthcare systems.
  • AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification (required).
  • Experience supporting production applications in regulated environments.
  • Hands-on experience working in AWS cloud environments.
  • Experience contributing to medium-to-large software development projects.
  • Proficiency in one or more backend programming languages (e.g., Java, C#, Python, or similar).
  • Experience developing RESTful APIs and service-based applications.
  • Familiarity with relational databases and data access concepts.
  • Experience with source control, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing.

Preferred Qualifications and Core Competencies:

  • Experience with healthcare interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR).
  • Prior experience supporting public health or government healthcare systems.
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience with Agile or Scrum development methodologies.
  • Prior, successful experience working in a remote environment

Compensation: There are a host of factors that can influence final salary, including, but not limited to, geographic location, Federal Government contract labor categories and contract wage rates, relevant prior work experience, specific skills and competencies, education, and certifications.
