Job Description
Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. This role is accountable for the development of CPG Business Intelligence (BI) tools/applications that meet the needs of CPG management, project delivery teams, functional teams and other internal/external partners. The Senior Data Engineer is responsible for transforming data from source layer to presentation layer to develop dashboards and management reporting to support a data driven culture within CPG. This position reports into the Manager, Manager, Data Architecture and Analytics.
What will I be doing?

  • Understand business requirements in BI & Analytics context, translate, refine and unify into technical reference architecture and design data solutions to transform raw data into meaningful insights
  • Develop and test Data Analytics prototypes, proof of concepts, pilots and production builds for business improvement plans and business cases that aim to understand and improve on the performance and success metrics through the analysis, processing and reporting of data that is collected through business processes and systems
  • Assist in development of data product roadmaps and delivery of full BI & Analytics solution lifecycle including design, development, implementation of new data solutions, production support, performance tuning of reporting environments, integration and sharing data with other applications
  • Analyze and recommend through evaluations, presentations and analyses for business cases the technologies to enhance Data Analytics to meet business objectives and strategies
  • Design, build and deploy Business Intelligence (BI) solutions using Power BI integrated with Microsoft Fabric’s environment for analytical and management review within Project Delivery Teams, Management and Central Function teams
  • Develop and execute database queries (SQL) and conduct analyses to be used by CPG to identify and measure performance improvement and by Management to identify opportunities for meeting and exceeding strategic goals and targets.
  • Develop applications using Microsoft Power Platform components, including Power Apps and Power Automate, with hands-on experience
  • Evaluate and improve existing BI systems by analyzing the design and architecture, Power BI data model to identify root causes of poor performance (in information accuracy and speed) and providing solutions to address them
  • Gather business requirements and facilitate key BI initiatives in partnership with the business units
  • Perform and support data analysis and advanced analytics using tools such as Python and R, and conduct predictive modeling and optimization to help Project Delivery Teams make data‑driven decisions
  • Keep up to date with Power BI new features and MS cloud integration
  • Design and implement automated data cataloging and metadata‑driven insight generation capabilities

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?

  • Completion of a degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline - or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience in Data Science, Data Analytics and Business Intelligence
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Power BI tools creating data-rich dashboards, implementing row-level security, Power Query and DAX using Microsoft BI stack
  • Highly proficient in reading and writing advance SQL queries, data analysis and experience with at least one major programming languages like Python, R. and Java
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric and Power BI Premium, including relational databases, data warehousing, data pipelines and dataflows, notebooks, and semantic models.
  • Strong understanding of data warehousing, dimensional modeling, ELT/ETL pipelines, and modern cloud data architecture patterns
  • Familiarity with relational databases such as SQL Server, Azure SQL, or Oracle.
  • Experience with Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of machine learning concepts, model lifecycle, and/or experience using Azure ML or Fabric Notebooks for predictive analytics
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills, with the ability to handle conflicting demands and prioritize effectively
  • Proven abilities to take initiative and be innovative
  • Analytical mind with a problem-solving aptitude
