Lead Software Engineer
Role summary
A Lead Software Engineer is sought to design, develop, and optimize software applications for the Baseball Operations department. This role involves technical leadership in software development, architecture, and cloud infrastructure, as well as mentoring engineers. The engineer will collaborate with baseball personnel to create innovative solutions, enhance decision-making, and improve operational efficiency. Key responsibilities include leading full-stack development, architecting scalable solutions, implementing best practices, developing APIs, and ensuring application performance and maintainability. A strong understanding of modern programming languages, front-end and back-end frameworks, cloud platforms, and DevOps is essential.
Position Summary
As a Lead Software Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in designing, developing, and optimizing software applications that support the entire Baseball Operations department. This role requires technical expertise in software development, architecture, and cloud-based infrastructure, as well as leadership capabilities to mentor and guide other engineers. You will collaborate closely with analysts, scouts, coaches, and other baseball personnel to create innovative solutions that enhance decision-making and operational efficiency.
Essential Functions
- Lead the development and maintenance of full-stack applications that support baseball operations, scouting, player development, and analytics.
- Architect scalable, high-performance software solutions, ensuring reliability and security.
- Implement best practices for software engineering, including version control, testing, and deployment pipelines.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and translate baseball operations needs into technical solutions.
- Mentor and provide technical leadership to the engineering team in terms of system design, software architecture, and development.
- Develop and optimize APIs and database integrations to facilitate seamless data access and analysis.
- Build front-end solutions that solve the needs of users across the organization with varying requirements and technical capabilities.
- Ensure the performance, scalability, and maintainability of software applications.
- Stay informed about emerging technologies and trends in software development and baseball technology.
- Work closely with the Director of Baseball Applications to align software development efforts with organizational goals.
Skill Requirements
- Proficiency in modern programming languages such as Python, TypeScript, or Java.
- Experience with front-end frameworks (React, Angular, or Vue) and back-end frameworks (Node.js, Django, or Flask).
- Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) and DevOps best practices.
- Experience developing and integrating APIs and working with relational and NoSQL databases.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Capable of contributing to front-end development across web and mobile applications.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex technical challenges.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Passion for baseball and familiarity with advanced baseball analytics is a plus.
Education & Experience Guidelines
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field required; Advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10+ years of experience in software engineering, application development, or related fields.
- Experience leading software development teams or technical projects.
- Proven track record of building and maintaining large-scale applications in a professional environment.
- Past exposure to Major League Baseball or other professional sports front office a significant plus.
Work Environment
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Availability to travel occasionally for industry conferences or organizational needs.
- Ability to sit/stand for extended periods and work in an office environment.
