Role summary

The Visual Studio Marketplace and NuGet Team is seeking a Software Engineer II to build and operate CoreAI services. The Visual Studio Marketplace and NuGet Team build and operate CoreAI services that empower millions of developers worldwide. Visual Studio Marketplace is the home for extensions that expand the capabilities of Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code, serving tens of millions of users daily. NuGet.org is the central repository for .NET packages, handling over 7 billion downloads weekly and enabling seamless package publishing, consumption, and management.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop complex cloud services and systems for Visual Studio Marketplace and NuGet.org.
  • Deliver high-scale, high-availability features end-to-end, ensuring world-class service availability, performance, and security, aligning software with business goals, timelines, and user expectations.
  • Lead by example with technical excellence, sharing knowledge and fostering a culture of excellence.
  • Collaborate in a fast-moving, empowered team environment, partnering across teams for end-to-end solutions and integrations.
  • Participate in agile development practices, including sprint planning, code reviews, and continuous integration.
  • Participate in on-call rotation to monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and ensure reliability and security.
  • Contribute to an inclusive and collaborative team culture, operating with a growth mindset and supporting continuous improvement.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience with cloud services, including Azure development.
  • Experience building applications adhering to the highest security standards.
  • Experienced in using AI-assisted coding and productivity tools
  • Hands-on experience building AI-driven features: prompt design, tool/function calling, eval harnesses; understanding of MCP/agent patterns. Data & experimentation.

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
