Sign up to see compensation estimateA venture-backed medical device company is seeking a Director or Principal Embedded Software Engineer to lead the embedded platform for a next-generation implantable monitoring system. The company has rapidly advanced its technology from concept to human implants and has recently submitted its first device for regulatory clearance.
This role represents the first internal embedded software leadership hire and will play a critical role in shaping the next generation of the platform while refining the existing firmware architecture.
The position offers a unique opportunity to work on a novel implantable ECG monitoring technology and help define the future architecture of a device platform designed to collect large amounts of physiologic data to improve disease detection and monitoring.
Role Overview
The Director of Embedded Software will own the embedded platform and serve as the technical leader responsible for firmware architecture, vendor oversight, and next-generation development.
The individual will work closely with hardware, systems, and clinical teams while managing external development partners and guiding the technical roadmap for future device iterations.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead the embedded software architecture for an implantable medical device platform
• Refine and optimize firmware developed by external engineering partners
• Manage and guide firmware development vendors and external teams
• Drive development of next-generation embedded software capabilities
• Work closely with hardware and systems teams on sensing and detection algorithms
• Support telemetry and communication systems including Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
• Ensure compliance with medical device software development and regulatory requirements
• Contribute to future product development and platform expansion into additional disease states
• Help build and lead the internal embedded software team as the company grows
Required Qualifications
• 10+ years of experience developing embedded software or firmware
• Experience working on regulated medical devices
• Strong background in C/C++ embedded development
• Experience with low-power embedded systems and wireless telemetry
• Experience collaborating across hardware, systems, and software teams
• Experience managing external engineering vendors or distributed development teams
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience developing firmware for implantable or cardiac medical devices
• Experience with ECG sensing, physiologic monitoring, or signal processing
• Startup or early-stage product development experience
• Experience supporting FDA regulatory submissions
