NextStep AI | Summer Software Engineering Intern

June 29 to September 18, 2026 | Full-time | On-site, Auburn, WA | $3,000/mo

NextStep is a AI startup building a tutoring and learning platform for schools. Our product is live and serving students across three countries. We are a small founding team and we are hiring interns who want to build alongside us this summer.

The role

You will write production code from your first week. As an early-stage company, we do not have separate intern projects. You will work on the same codebase, the same features, and the same deadlines as the founding engineers. What you build will ship to real classrooms.

Day to day, that means working across frontend, backend, APIs, and AI integrations. You will have real ownership over features and direct input on technical decisions.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
  • You have built and shipped something outside of class. Side projects, open source contributions, or freelance work all count.
  • Strong fundamentals. You can learn new tools quickly and work through problems independently.
  • Experience with Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, or Node.js is helpful
  • Experience with LLMs or AI application development is a plus
  • We welcome OPT and international students

What you get

  • Production engineering experience
  • Mentorship directly from the founding team
  • A professional reference and letter of recommendation
  • A path to a full-time engineering role
