Role summary

O'Reilly Auto Parts is seeking an on-site Network Security Engineer in Springfield, MO, to protect its enterprise network infrastructure. This role involves designing, deploying, and operating security solutions for corporate, retail, data center, and cloud environments. Responsibilities include implementing controls like Zscaler and Next-Gen Firewalls, optimizing traffic flows, ensuring accurate telemetry to SIEM/SOAR, and developing automation. The engineer will analyze network traffic, support Zero Trust principles, investigate security incidents, and perform packet-level analysis. A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience with 4+ years in IT and demonstrated leadership is required.

The
Network Security Engineer
is responsible for safeguarding enterprise network infrastructure by designing, deploying, and operating security solutions that monitor, inspect, and protect network traffic at scale. This role ensures secure connectivity across corporate, retail, data center, and cloud environments. The engineer leverages advanced network visibility platforms, cloud-secured access technologies, and packet brokers to detect threats, prevent data loss, and maintain a resilient security posture.
This is an on site position located in Springfield, MO.
Responsibilities And Duties

  • Design, implement, and operate network security controls including Zscaler ZIA/ZPA, Next‑Gen Firewalls, packet brokers, and network sensors.
  • Optimize traffic flows, inspection policies, and routing to support business performance and security objectives.
  • Ensure accurate telemetry and metadata feeds to SIEM/SOAR, MDR partners, and internal detection engineering teams.
  • Develop automation and monitoring to improve reliability and reduce manual effort.
  • Contribute to documentation, runbooks, playbooks, and architecture diagrams.
  • Partner with Network Engineering, Infrastructure, Security Operations, and Application teams to deliver secure network solutions.
  • Analyze network traffic patterns to identify anomalies, threats, policy violations, and performance issues.
  • Administer and enhance Zscaler (ZIA/ZPA) configurations including policies, authentication methods, branch/store routing, and user experience optimization.
  • Support Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) and secure application connectivity.
  • Investigate and resolve network security incidents, including traffic anomalies, malicious communications, and access control issues.
  • Provide packet-level analysis using tools like Zeek logs, PCAPs, and packet broker introspection.
  • Assist in policy creation, security standards, and configuration baselines for enterprise network security.
  • Produce KPIs, visibility dashboards, and reporting on network security posture, coverage, and gaps.

Skills
Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems or equivalent work experience
  • 4+ years’ experience in Information Technology
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Strong background in network engineering, network protocols, packet analysis, and traffic inspection.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks

Preferred

  • Deep understanding of TCP/IP, routing, switching, DNS, TLS, HTTP/HTTPS, and network segmentation.
  • Familiarity with Zero Trust principles, secure access service edge (SASE), and cloud security concepts.
  • Experience integrating network telemetry with SIEM/SOAR tools.
  • Designs, executes and reports on systems/service tests to ensure that an application functions as specified in the requirements.
  • Archives, backs up, and restores data and servers to specified states.
  • Determines and analyzes trends from data that is collected to assist in compiling reports that will help in decision-making.
  • Shifts into and out of a mental mindset associated with assessing the facts and circumstances of the current situation and/or environment, and making the appropriate/innovative adjustments to thinking and work habits to thrive in any scenario.

Education: Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent Level
Experience: Experienced practitioner able to deal with the majority of situations and to advise others (3 to 6 years)
Managerial Experience: Experience with general supervision of more junior colleagues (7 to 12 months)
