About the team:

The Biowulf team in the
Public Sector
department
is seeking a
HPC DevOps Software Developer/Architect
to be part of the team that manages a large-scale high-manages a
large-scale high‑performance computing (HPC) cluster
and its supporting systems. The platform supports
800+ NIH researchers and faculty
working on advanced biomedical research. Biowulf is the
largest supercomputer in the world dedicated solely to biomedical research
.

Role Level and Experience:

- The HPC DevOps engineer
role is a senior position, ideally SME level 1, requiring extensive HPC experience, preferably from other supercomputing centers.
- Candidates should have
7 to 10 years of relevant experience
.

Your Impact:

  • You’ll directly support the computing environment researchers use every day.
  • This work helps advance research into how cells function in the human body and new treatments for diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and COVID‑19
  • You’ll help maintain the health, connectivity, and inventory of 2,800+ servers that power Biowulf.
  • Keep thousands of Linux computers healthy, connected, monitored, and performing well.
  • Build small tools and dashboards so the team and users can see what’s happening and fix issues quickly.

Your Roles and Responsibilities:

- Monitor and support a large number of
Linux systems
, including systems running user compute jobs and systems supporting the overall HPC infrastructure.
- Collect, log, and analyze data from thousands of compute nodes and hundreds of thousands to millions of user jobs
- Proactively identify issues such as disk usage bottlenecks across
60+ petabytes (PB) of data and n
etwork performance concerns (bandwidth and latency)
- Build, maintain, debug, and improve command‑line tools and web interfaces for viewing metrics, events, and predicting trends

Work environment:

  • These tasks will all be performed in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment.
  • To be successful you will need to work both independently and as a member of a team of system administrators, scientists and researchers and be able to translate broad directions into specific technical actions.

Must‑haves:

- Since the Biowulf environment is exclusively Linux-based, requires very strong
Linux experience
, specifically with
Red Hat–based distributions (RHEL)
- Experience with software development and deployment tools
(Git and Ansible)
.
- Coding experience in one or more:
Python, Rust, Go, Perl, or C/C++
.

Nice‑to‑haves (but not required):

  • Monitoring and logging tools (Zabbix, Prometheus, Elasticsearch)
  • Databases services (ClickHouse, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Redis, Graphite or InfluxDB)
  • Analytics and visualization tools (Kibana or Grafana)
  • Distributed filesystems (VAST, GPFS or NetApp)
  • Preparing and presenting technical reports

Hybrid Work Arrangement:

- The project requires to be
on‑site at least once a week
- Additional on‑site time may be needed based on operational requirements.

Annual Pay Range (in USD): $120,000 - $145,000
