Role summary

Pulsar Products is seeking a UI/UX Designer + QA Tester for its three-person application development team. This combined role, roughly 60% design and 40% testing, will be responsible for the entire look and feel of the company's mobile application, starting with a new inverter product line. Key design responsibilities include creating app screens, dashboards, and a reusable design system in Figma, with an understanding of Flutter UI components. On the QA side, the role involves testing builds on physical devices and inverter hardware, writing test cases in Jira, and simulating real-world scenarios. The position requires strong Figma skills, mobile app testing experience, and comfort with Git and cross-time zone collaboration. The role offers full creative ownership and the opportunity to shape the product's user experience.

COMPANY

Pulsar Products is a battery storage company developing smart inverter and generator products for the residential and commercial market. We are building an application development team with engineering talent in the U.S. and Asia to own our product experience from design through testing.

THE TEAM

The Application Development Team is a three-person team. All three team members report directly to the Director of Renewables, who provides leadership, product direction, and oversight of overseas manufacturing coordination. The team is distributed — the Full-Stack Mobile Developer and this position (UI/UX Designer + QA Tester) is based in California, while the Embedded / Firmware Engineer is based in East or Southeast Asia.

Team structure:

  • Full-Stack Mobile Developer (1 position — California)
  • UI/UX Designer + QA Tester (1 combined position — California)
  • Embedded / Firmware Engineer (1 position — East or Southeast Asia)

Leadership: Director of Renewables (California) — all three team members report directly to the Director.

Sprint Coordination: The Full-Stack Mobile Developer, based in California, is responsible for scheduling and running weekly sprint meetings, setting sprint priorities, and coordinating deliverables across time zones. This is a coordination responsibility, not a management role — all team members report to the Director of Renewables equally.

Note: The UI/UX Designer and QA Tester is a single combined position. One person owns both the design and testing functions for the team. This is not two separate roles.

The first project is a mobile app for our inverter product line — you will design every screen and test every build. That is the four-month priority.

After launch, you will handle ongoing design updates, QA for new features, and expand into designing web-based tools as the company grows.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

This is a split role — roughly 60% design, 40% testing. On the design side, you own the entire look and feel of the app: dashboards, energy flow screens, setup wizards, alerts, the works. On the QA side, you test every build on real phones and real inverter hardware before anything goes live.

Design Responsibilities:

  • Design all app screens, components, and interaction flows in Figma
  • Create energy monitoring dashboards — battery gauges, solar production charts, power flow diagrams, usage history
  • Design onboarding and device setup flows for homeowners and installers
  • Build a reusable design system (colors, type, spacing, components) that carries into future products
  • Create App Store and Google Play screenshots and promotional graphics
  • Study competitor apps (Generac, Tesla, Enphase, SolarEdge) and find the gaps
  • Work closely with the Full-Stack Mobile Developer to ensure designs translate accurately into Flutter UI components
  • Understand Flutter widget structure and Material/Cupertino design patterns to deliver developer-ready Figma specs
  • Iterate on designs based on user feedback, testing results, and team input

QA Responsibilities:

  • Test every app build on multiple iOS and Android devices, desktop, tablets, etc.
  • Write and maintain test cases in Jira
  • Test inverter-to-app communication — BLE pairing, Wi-Fi setup, data streaming, reconnection after drops
  • Simulate real-world scenarios: grid outage, battery full, battery dead, weak Wi-Fi, firmware updating mid-session
  • File clear bug reports in Jira with screenshots and steps to reproduce
  • Verify fixes and run regression tests each sprint
  • Test on actual inverter hardware, not just simulators

Other duties as assigned

SCHEDULE AND COORDINATION

Weekly Sprint Meetings. The Full-Stack Mobile Developer in California schedules and runs weekly sprint planning/review meetings during California business hours (Pacific Time). You are expected to attend. The specific day and time will be set by the team to find the best overlap window across time zones.

Daily Standups. Daily standups are conducted asynchronously via Slack or WhatsApp, with a live standup option when time zones permit.

Flexible Working Hours. Because the team spans multiple time zones (California, East Asia, Southeast Asia), you will need to maintain some overlap hours with the Asoia team member(s) for real-time collaboration while managing the rest of your schedule independently.

Sprint Cadence. Sprint cycles follow a two-week cadence. You are responsible for setting your own weekly deliverables, tracking progress in Jira, and flagging blockers before they become problems.
