Role summary

RealDefense is hiring a hybrid QA Engineer (Generalist) in Los Angeles to ensure the quality of System Mechanic Ultimate Defense and its platform components. This role involves manual testing of Windows desktop applications and web integrations, focusing on end-to-end customer scenarios. Responsibilities include designing and executing test plans, validating workflows like installation and licensing, troubleshooting issues using logs and network tools, and defect tracking in JIRA/Azure DevOps. The position requires a strong understanding of QA fundamentals, web concepts, and agile environments. Candidates should be detail-oriented, technically curious, and open to exploring AI-powered QA tools. This is not an automation-first role.

This is a hybrid position requiring regular in-office presence in Los Angeles. Applicants must reside in or near the Los Angeles area. Out-of-state candidates will not be considered.

Role Overview:

RealDefense is seeking a QA Engineer (Generalist) to support the quality, stability, and reliability of System Mechanic Ultimate Defense and its next-generation platform components.

This role focuses on Windows desktop application testing and platform integration, with general web QA skills for validating how the product interacts with backend services, licensing systems, and web-based workflows. The QA Engineer will test end-to-end customer scenarios that span desktop software, web services, and platform infrastructure. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys problem-solving, collaborating across teams, and is open to learning how AI can enhance testing efficiency and coverage.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, technically curious, and comfortable working closely with

engineering and product teams in an agile environment. This is not a pure automation or front-end web QA role; strong manual testing and system understanding are key.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, maintain, and execute test plans, test cases, and regression suites
  • Perform manual functional, regression, and exploratory testing of Windows desktop applications
  • Validate installers, upgrades, activation, licensing, purchasing, subscription, and uninstall flows
  • Test integration points between desktop applications and web-based backend services
  • Perform general web QA activities, including validation of client-server workflows and service interactions
  • Inspect and troubleshoot issues using logs and network traffic inspection tools
  • Identify, reproduce, document, and track defects using JIRA or Azure DevOps
  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering team throughout agile development cycles
  • Validate builds and support release readiness activities
  • Assist with post-release validation and customer-reported issue investigation

AI‑Related Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn and adopt AI‑powered QA tools that support test creation, defect detection, and analysis.
  • Experiment with AI‑assisted test generation, log analysis, and pattern recognition to enhance testing efficiency.
  • Stay informed about emerging AI technologies relevant to quality engineering and share insights with the team.
  • Required Qualifications
  • 2+ years of QA experience testing Windows desktop, web, or platform-integrated products
  • Strong understanding of manual QA fundamentals and regression testing
  • Experience testing system workflows such as: Installers and updaters
  • Licensing, activation, and purchasing
  • Client-server interactions
  • General knowledge of web concepts (HTTP/S, basic APIs, service interactions)
  • Ability to analyze issues using logs, system tools, and basic network inspection
  • Experience working in agile development environments
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail

Tools & Technologies (Experience or Exposure)

  • Defect tracking and test management: JIRA
  • CI / CD Pipelines Azure DevOps
  • Jenkins
  • Network and integration troubleshooting: Fiddler or similar traffic inspection tools
  • Performance and load testing (basic exposure): JMeter
  • General testing and diagnostics: Browser developer tools
  • Windows system utilities and logs

. Practical familiarity and willingness to learn are valued.

Preferred Experience (Nice to Have)

  • Exposure to basic test automation or scripting
  • Experience testing platform, security, privacy, or consumer software
  • Familiarity with build validation or CI/CD concepts
