Role summary

Rebar is seeking a Software Engineer to join their growing team in New York City. The company is building an AI operating system for commercial HVAC, Electrical, and Plumbing, having recently raised $14M in Series A funding. The engineer will contribute to a real-time, collaborative platform, focusing on feature development, code quality, performance, and user experience. Over the past year our quoting platform has processed tens of thousands of projects across North America and we’re continuing that growth. Our customers include many of the top firms in the industry. Some of these companies are running billion dollar construction projects on workflows that still look like it's 1985.

Construction is 10% of GDP and still massively underserved by software. We are changing that.

We recently raised a $14M Series A from leading construction tech investors and are entering our next phase of growth. We are building a set of AI native products that will define how this industry operates.

About the Role

We’re hiring a talented Sofware Engineer to help build and scale a real-time, collaborative platform for the field. You’ll join a small, experienced team working on high-performance web applications that support critical workflows in a large, evolving industry.

This role is a great fit for someone who enjoys crafting thoughtful user experiences, working with modern engineering tools, and growing in a fast-moving, early-stage environment.

Responsibilities

  • Feature Development – Contribute to building and shipping product features, with a focus on user experience and interface design

  • Code Quality – Write clear, maintainable, and well-tested code, and help improve team standards over time

  • Collaboration – Partner closely with engineers and cross-functional teammates to deliver cohesive product experiences

  • Performance – Help ensure the application remains fast, responsive, and reliable

  • Learning & Growth – Continue developing your skills while contributing to a strong and supportive engineering culture

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who is excited about building modern web applications and contributing to a collaborative team. You don’t need to meet every requirement below—if this role interests you, we encourage you to reach out.

You might be a great fit if you:

  • Enjoy building with React and TypeScript (or similar tools), and are comfortable building out new services and endpoints

  • Care about user experience and thoughtful interface design

  • Write clean, readable code and are open to feedback

  • Are motivated to learn and grow in a fast-paced environment

  • Value collaboration and clear communication

Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience as a Software Engineer

  • Experience working with JavaScript/TypeScript and React (or similar frameworks)

  • Exposure to state management tools (Redux, Zustand, or similar)

  • Experience using Git and collaborating on a team

  • An understanding of responsive design and cross-browser behavior

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

  • Familiarity with AWS best practices

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Next.js or similar frameworks

  • Familiarity with real-time systems (WebSockets, etc.)

  • Exposure to testing tools (Jest, Cypress, Playwright, etc.)

  • Awareness of accessibility best practices

  • Interest in performance optimization

  • Experience working with or contributing to design systems

  • Curiosity about UI/UX design

  • Experience building collaborative or interactive tools
