About the Role
The Staff Software Engineer, Artificial Intelligence role is a strategic technical leadership position responsible for setting the architecture and technical direction for AI and ML applications within the organization. This role drives the development and productionization of advanced AI features, mentors senior engineers, and collaborates cross-functionally to integrate AI into healthcare products. The position shapes the long-term AI strategy and ensures the delivery of robust, responsible AI systems that support the organization's mission.
Responsibilities
- Define end-to-end architecture and manage the full lifecycle of critical ML/AI applications
- Lead productionization of ML and AI features in Python, integrated with backend services
- Set technical standards and mentor the engineering team to elevate capabilities
- Collaborate with product and medical teams to design safeguards and business constraints for AI outputs
- Work with engineering leadership to build interfaces for Data Science applications used across products
- Design and implement automated evaluation frameworks for accuracy, fairness, and performance
- Maintain and improve existing NLP and AI diagnostic production components
- Develop analytics to monitor system performance and prioritize improvements
- Lead strategy for efficient and resilient use of AWS Bedrock
- Research, prototype, and introduce new AI tools, APIs, and architectures aligned with organizational needs
- Contribute to the organization's long-term AI strategy and vision
Requirements
- Master's degree in a related field, or 8+ years of experience in software engineering or applied machine learning with real-world AI/ML system development
- Experience in healthcare-specific AI/ML solutions or handling sensitive data with impactful AI/ML applications
- Proficiency in backend software engineering using Python
- Strong understanding of embeddings and embedding databases
- Familiarity with modern AI/ML frameworks and tools, and ongoing attention to emerging technologies
- Experience deploying cloud-native applications on AWS
- Proven ability to transition models from research to production addressing latency, scale, and reliability
- Effective communication skills for cross-disciplinary collaboration in an agile environment
- Strong technical leadership abilities, with experience growing and supporting senior engineering teams
Nice to Have
- Experience with multimodal AI interfaces or agent-based dialogue systems
- Experience hosting, scaling, and fine-tuning open-source models
- Passion for improving healthcare access and outcomes through AI
Compensation
$165,000 — $210,000 USD annually (national pay range)
Actual compensation will depend on geographic market, experience, skills, and qualifications. Certain roles may be eligible for additional compensation including medical, dental, vision coverage, unlimited PTO, 401(k) plan, stock options, and bonuses.
