Azure Billing Data Engineer

Role summary
We are seeking a senior Azure FinOps and billing subjectmatter expert to support an ongoing public cloud cost and usage initiative. This is a staffaugmentation role focused on providing deep technical and functional advisory around Azure Cost Management and Billing data, including schema interpretation, SKU rationalization, and commitment model handling. The role is primarily advisory, with handson contribution where appropriate to validate approaches and accelerate delivery.
What you will do
- Serve as a functional and technical advisor on Azure Cost Management and Billing data, validating assumptions, designs, and implementation decisions made by the broader delivery team.
- Decompose Azure billing exports and invoices to explain how usage, charges, reservations, savings plans, credits, and adjustments map to real Azure infrastructure.
- Provide guidance on interpreting Azure billing schema fields, including situations where column meaning must be inferred or reconciled across exports and invoices.
- Advise on the correct treatment of Azure Reservations and Azure Savings Plans, including eligibility, fee versus consumption handling, and alignment with internal cost models.
- Support the extension of an existing AWS and GCP conformed cost model to Azure, ensuring consistency in product categorization and cost semantics across clouds.
- Lead or participate in discovery and rationalization sessions to define Azure SKU mapping logic for services such as Virtual Machines, Managed Disks, Storage, Networking, AKS, App Services, Databases, and Marketplace offerings.
- Review and validate SQL or KQL logic used to normalize and join Azure billing data, contributing handson changes when necessary to clarify or prove an approach.
- Provide guidance on integrating Azure billing data into an existing analytics environment using technologies such as Trino, S3, and Iceberg tables.
- Document mapping decisions, schema interpretations, and known edge cases, and support structured knowledge transfer to the client team as ownership transitions.
Required experience
- Deep, handson experience working with Azure Cost Management and Billing data in real production environments.
- Strong understanding of how Azure billing maps to actual infrastructure, including VM sizes and series, managed disks, storage tiers, networking charges, and platform services.
- Proven experience advising on and implementing Azure Reservations and Azure Savings Plans, including nuanced handling of fees, usage, and eligible SKUs.
- Experience classifying and normalizing large volumes of Azure SKUs into logical product hierarchies suitable for FinOps and analytics use cases.
- Ability to read, review, and reason about SQL and/or KQL used for billing data transformation, with the capability to contribute handson when required.
- Prior experience in FinOps, cloud economics, cloud billing, or cost and usage analytics roles.
- Comfortable operating in a senior advisory capacity within a staffaugmentation engagement.
Nice to have
- Experience aligning Azure billing models with AWS CUR and GCP billing exports.
- Familiarity with open table formats such as Iceberg and cloudagnostic analytics stacks.
- Experience working with custom or nonvendorstandard cost models rather than offtheshelf FinOps frameworks.

Pay: $65.00 - $70.00 per hour
