About Shinkei Systems

Shinkei Systems builds technology that improves how food moves through the world.

We design robotic and software systems that bring consistency, quality, and care to seafood processing—preserving value, reducing waste, and supporting healthier supply chains. Our work is grounded in respect for craft, informed by long-standing practices, and executed with modern engineering.

This is applied, real-world work. The systems we build operate in demanding environments and have visible, tangible impact.

The Role

This role contributes directly to the robotic systems that power Shinkei’s Poseidon platform. As a Software Engineer focused on robotics, you’ll work at the intersection of software and hardware—building systems that directly influence robot behavior, safety, and reliability in the real world.

You’ll tackle problems that require technical rigor, practical judgment, and hands-on execution, balancing reliability, performance, and maintainability as our fleet and capabilities scale.

What You’ll Do

• Support motor and sensor selection, development, and integration for Poseidon robots, enabling both current and next-generation deployments

• Write software that interfaces directly with hardware to improve robot behavior, system efficiency, and user safety

• Design and implement automated testing and diagnostic frameworks for robotic components used in the field, manufacturing, and R&D

• Analyze system metrics and investigate failure modes observed in the field or in our in-house test environments

• Develop highly reliable, maintainable, and testable software in C++ and/or Python

• Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, field, and software engineers to deliver robust, production-ready robotic systems

What You’ll Need

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field

• Experience owning a software project in C++ or Python from development through production

• Experience building or supporting systems that interact with real-world hardware

• Strong problem-solving skills and comfort working in a fast-paced, highly cross-functional environment

• Ability to break down complex technical concepts and communicate them clearly to diverse audiences

• Clear, pragmatic written and verbal communication skills

• A learning mindset and eagerness to apply new technologies to real-world challenges

Bonus If You Have Experience With

• Robotics or hardware-integrated software systems

• Automated testing, diagnostics, or reliability engineering

• Real-time systems, controls, or automation

• Analyzing operational data from deployed systems

• Working in harsh, safety-critical, or high-reliability environments

What We Value:

We’re a small, focused team that values:

• Low ego, high ownership

• Thoughtful decision-making and clear communication

• Respect for craft—mechanical, digital, and operational

• Building systems that last

Compensation & Benefits

• Competitive salary

• 401(k) plan

• Health, dental, vision, life, and short-term disability insurance

• 80 hours of paid time off, accrued throughout the year

• Seremoni-grade fish to take home—so the quality we build can be experienced at the table as well as in the field

Other Things to Know

• This is a
100% in-person role
based in El Segundo, CA

• Hands-on integration and testing with robots is a core part of the job

• You’ll work closely with a fast-moving team during a key growth phase—supporting new fish species, expanding the deployed robot fleet, and developing software tools that improve fisherman efficiency

• Our systems integrate computer vision, robotics, and advanced mechanical design to enhance seafood processing quality and consistency
