Role summary
SiPhox Health is seeking an Embedded AI Systems Engineer to design and manage the firmware for their innovative silicon-photonics diagnostic device. This role involves architecting the end-to-end firmware layer, including optics, fluidics, thermal control, sensing, motion, safety, and UX. Responsibilities include implementing machine vision and signal processing, developing bootloaders and calibration flows, leading the product lifecycle from bring-up to release, and ensuring reliability and safety through hazard analysis and FMEA. The ideal candidate has strong C/C++ skills, RTOS experience, and a proven track record in firmware architecture and debugging complex electromechanical systems.
+++ About SiPhox Health +++
SiPhox is bringing silicon-photonics diagnostics out of the central lab and into the home. We combine photonics, microfluidics, embedded systems, and semiconductor-grade manufacturing to quantify multiple biomarkers in minutes on a coffee-maker-sized device—aiming to build the first mass-market photonic blood analyzer to improve chronic disease care and increase human healthspan.
+++ The Opportunity +++
We’re hiring an **Embedded AI Systems Engineer** to architect and own the firmware layer that runs the instrument end-to-end: optics, fluidics, thermal control, sensing, motion, safety, and UX. You’ll define the real-time behaviors that make a complex, multi-domain system operate with medical-grade precision and reliability, partnering closely across EE, systems, assay, photonics, fluidics, mechanical, and software.
+++ What You’ll Do +++
* Build production embedded firmware: HALs, RT state machines, event-driven control, inter-module comms
* Convert system needs into clear, testable requirements and designs
* Implement/optimize machine vision + signal processing for electromechanical accuracy
* Develop bootloaders, calibration flows, diagnostics, and test/fixture firmware
* Lead bring-up → V&V → commercial release, integrating across sensors, motion, fluidics, photonics, and cloud/app
* Own reliability/safety: hazard analysis, FMEA inputs, fault-tolerant behaviors, verification automation + traceability
* Debug complex system issues; optimize timing, control loops, memory, and performance
+++ What We’re Looking For +++
**Must-have**
* Strong C/C++ for embedded (drivers, bring-up, real-time control)
* RTOS experience (e.g., FreeRTOS/Zephyr/ThreadX/VxWorks)
* Experience with common MCU families (STM32/ESP32/NXP/Nordic or similar)
* Motion/electromechanical control (steppers/servos, closed-loop control)
* Proven firmware architecture ownership + excellent cross-disciplinary debugging
* BS in EE/CE/CS (or equivalent), US work authorization, occasional travel (<10%)
* Top-tier work ethic, high standards, and ownership mindset
**Nice-to-have**
* Shipped complex electromechanical products end-to-end
* Fluidics / liquid handling automation experience
* Medical device firmware under ISO 13485 / IEC 62304 (Class C preferred) and risk mgmt per ISO 14971
* Calibration/DAQ, wireless connectivity, manufacturing fixtures
* Security/data integrity familiarity (21 CFR Part 11, HIPAA, IEC 80001)
+++ Why This Role Is Unique +++
You’ll build the firmware foundation for a new category: a consumer-deployed silicon-photonic diagnostic device that tightly couples optics, fluidics, motion, and sensing—and ships lab-quality biomarker measurement into millions of homes.
+++ Benefits +++
Generous equity compensation
Luxury gym membership
Healthcare, dental, 401k, etc.
Two 1-week company shutdowns (summer/July 4 and Christmas break) in addattion to PTO
