Role summary

The DevOps Engineer will be the primary architect and steward of a new Azure Data Lake system, responsible for its design, development, implementation, integration, and ongoing maintenance. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to optimize existing data workflows and applications within the Azure Data Lake, and enhancing the organization's AI posture, particularly with Microsoft Copilot. Key responsibilities include ensuring data infrastructure security, maintaining documentation, integrating CI/CD workflows with automated testing and security scanning, implementing container security, and developing dashboards for platform performance. The engineer will also support incident response, act as a proactive solutions-finder, and communicate critical updates to leadership.

PRIMARY FUNCTION / RESPONSIBILTY

Serve as the primary architect and steward of a new Azure Data Lake system, responsible for design, development, implementation, systemic integration, and ongoing maintenance. This role will collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate and optimize existing data workflows and applications in the Azure Data Lake. The DevOps Engineer will optimize SJRC Texas’ AI posture, assisting in implementation within a complex infrastructure and ecosystem, while serving as a subject matter expert in the frontier of AI.

## ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the construction and ongoing maintenance of a Data Lake system to meet the organization’s needs
  • Support the organization in capturing, mapping and solving for the integration of a complex set of requirements.
  • Comprehend strategic value and potential of AI systems (primarily Microsoft Copilot), particularly agentic AI implementations for workflow optimization to solve specific use cases.
  • Ensure security of data infrastructure and applications by implementing best practices, security controls, and compliance standards.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of infrastructure, processes, and procedures to facilitate knowledge sharing and ensure operational excellence. This includes but is not limited to detailed change management logs and system write-ups.
  • Integrate automated testing, code quality analysis, and security scanning into CI/CD workflows.
  • Implement container security policies and runtime monitoring.
  • Understand best practices for Power Automate flows and implement them for immensely varied use cases.
  • Implement dashboards and metrics for platform performance and reliability, as well as assist Data Analytics teams with dashboard creation within PowerBI.
  • Support incident response and root-cause analysis as needed.
  • Serve as an innovative, proactive solutions-finder, leveraging the entire IT team and other departments to autonomously identify and improve use cases.
  • Synthesize and communicate critical domain updates to department leadership so that they can proactively address organizational impact and implement responsive solutions.
  • Work independently on special projects under the direction of the VP of IT.
  • Travel as needed (30%) between facilities in San Antonio, New Braunfels, and Bulverde, TX.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in technology or a related field, or 4+ years of experience in the field in lieu of education
  • Certifications: Azure Data Fundamentals (DP-900) or equivalent certification.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure Cloud and Microsoft Fabric.
  • Comprehensive familiarity with Data Lake, Data Warehouse, and/or Data Lakehouse philosophies.
  • Familiarity with AI systems and their successful and long-term implementation within business systems while maintaining strict data security best practices (such as HIPAA, GDPR, and NIST).
  • Working knowledge of Cybersecurity technologies and NIST standards.
  • 1+ years of experience with Power Automate and Power BI flows.
  • Strong scripting abilities (examples: C+, SQL, Python, Bash, PowerShell, etc.) to resolve gaps, automate tasks, and tie systems and data together holistically.
  • Proficient with continuous improvement/continuous delivery [CI/CD] concepts and tools (examples: GitLab, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, etc.).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to identify and troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, to artfully communicate problems and solutions identified as well as translate critical information to lay audiences

Preferred:

  • 2+ years’ applicable experience with the Azure Cloud/Azure Data Systems.
  • 2+ years' experience with container technologies such as Kubernetes or Docker.
  • 2+ years' experience with CI/CD pipelines.
  • Progress in or completion of the following certifications:
  • Microsoft Azure Administrator (AZ-104)
  • Microsoft Azure Developer Associate (AZ-204)
  • Microsoft DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400)
  • Microsoft Azure AI Engineer Associate (AI-102)

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Body mobility to stoop, kneel, bend, reach, and walk.
  • Pick up or move light equipment.
  • Must have the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Campuses are smoke-free, except on permitted campuses in designated areas.
  • Possible injury when lifting or moving if an employee fails to use proper body mechanics, or if proper techniques are not used.
