General Description of Position
Under the general direction and supervision of the Administrative Director, Infrastructure, and the Chief Information Officer, the Network Security Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, and ongoing management of secure network architectures that protect organizational systems, applications, and data. This full-time, regular, on-site position ensures the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of enterprise infrastructure by applying modern cybersecurity principles, proactive monitoring, and risk mitigation strategies.
This individual works closely with Infrastructure, Client Services, and Enterprise Systems teams to integrate security best practices across all platforms. The Network Security Engineer leads efforts in threat detection, vulnerability management, incident response, and continuous improvement of the organization’s security posture while aligning with industry frameworks and compliance requirements.
Essential Functions
- Design, implement, and maintain secure network architectures
- Monitor network traffic for suspicious activity and respond to security events
- Lead and support incident response, including investigation, containment, and recovery
- Enforce security policies, standards, and best practices across network infrastructure
- Conduct regular security audits, risk assessments, and compliance checks
- Maintain and monitor network firewalls and other network security software and hardware tools, including anti-virus, intrusion detection, network access control, data loss prevention, and similar tools.
- Cooperate with various departments to ensure compliance with applicable data privacy regulations, including FERPA and HIPAA
- Automate repetitive processes with Windows PowerShell and other scripting languages.
- Monitor and maintain server operating systems. Ensure applicable security patches are installed. Ensure software is updated to stay within supported versions.
- Maintain essential network services, including the DHS, DHCP, and Domain Controller Services.
- Coordinate with departments such as Human Resources and Payroll to facilitate a dynamic process for delegating and reviewing accounts and access.
- Participate in continuing education to understand current trends and threats in the field of computer networking and security. Ongoing training, certifications, and educational opportunities are encouraged.
- Ensure secure configuration and patching of network devices (switches, routers, firewalls)
- Document network security designs, procedures, and incident reports
- Manage and tune security tools such as SIEM, IDS/IPS, and network access control (NAC)
- Work closely with Information Security Analyst(s) to develop and enforce security policies, respond to security events, provide training, and perform other similar functions.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Technical Skills:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical documents, instruction manuals, service manuals, and blueprints.
- Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical customers to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
- Ability to design, build, test, maintain, and secure LAN/WAN networks.
- Ability to suggest network improvements based on results received from network tools and other needed sources.
- Ability to deploy, maintain, and secure Linux and Windows servers and server applications.
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to use resourceful problem-solving to gather information about problems that are not clearly defined.
- Ability to use a security-centric mindset to protect college information systems from attack and abuse.
- Ability to make judgments to recommend or not recommend security software for use within the college network.
- Ability to make recommendations for right-sized IT infrastructure and security components.
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Experience in network management using Microsoft Active Directory.
- Experience in working with Windows and Linux-based servers.
- Experience working with Microsoft 365 and Azure.
- Experience working with routers and switches, using Cisco, HP/Aruba, Juniper, or Dell brands
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and on the phone.
- Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds for short distances and move tables, chairs, and media equipment when necessary.
- The individual must possess the above skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s degree\* (A.A.S.) from a two-year college or technical school with emphasis in electronics, computer science, computer networking, information security, or a related field.
- Three (3) years of work experience in computer networking, information security, or a related field.
- Two (2) years of post-secondary education with emphasis in computer networks, cyber security, or related skills, PLUSone (1) additional year of work experience servicing and maintaining a computer LAN/WAN network system, may be substituted for an associate’s degree.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (B.S) or higher degree with emphasis in electronics, computer science, computer networking, information security, or a related field.
- Work experience in excess of (3) years, in computer networking, information security, or a related field.
- Currently holding or working towards any of the following certifications:
- Cisco Certified Network Associate/Professional
- Cisco Certified CyberOps Associate
- HPE Aruba Network Certified Associate/Professional/Expert – Switching
- HPE Aruba Network Certified Associate/Professional/Expert – Campus Access
- HPE Aruba Networking Certified Network Architect
- CompTIA Security+
- CompTIA SecurityX
- CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst (CySA+)
- CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional)
- or comparable certifications from other vendors
Salary
$29.69 per hour
Benefits
SCCBEN Dollars – Eligible Employees: Full-time status. Regular employees with an FTE of 0.75 or greater will be eligible for SCC Ben Dollars. All employees will be required to elect a health insurance option. If the cost of insurance coverage selected by an employee exceeds the SCC Ben Dollars available, all additional costs will be withheld from the employee’s paycheck. Any SCC Ben Dollars that the employee does not elect to use for the purchase of dependent health and dental insurance will be paid to the employee in cash at $0.93 per $1.00 benefit dollar. All amounts paid are subject to withholding for income and employment taxes, but not subject to the College’s contribution toward the Retirement Savings Plan – Group Retirement Account (GRA).
Schedule
Normal working hours for this full-time regular position are scheduled between 7:00 a.m.and 10:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, requiring a minimum of a 40-hour work week, based on a 260-day work calendar. Scheduled special activities, emergencies, or temporary schedule changes may require hours outside of the regular workday or workweek. Monitoring and response to systems outages outside of normal work hours may be required.
