SpaceRake is pioneering the development of cutting-edge optical communication hardware, designed to connect platforms of any size and make data more accessible to all. SpaceRake’s optical communications hardware is set to revolutionize data transport, offering high volumes of data transmission with low latency on small platforms across domains from orbit to the ground. We are headquartered in Watertown, MA.

Role Description

SpaceRake, Inc. is currently looking for an experienced software engineer to join our team and help us build our laser communications hardware systems. You will work with a small team to help define and deliver the company’s prototype products. We’re looking for a creative individual that likes to work in a highly-cross-disciplinary team and is able to make high-level architectural decisions about new and prototype products. This is a hybrid role with in-person work required on occasion to interface with hardware. Fully remote can be considered for very strong candidates.

Responsibilities
:

  • Work with the team to develop our laser communications systems
  • Help build onboard systems on both ground and highly mobile compute platforms
  • Generate responsive and intuitive solutions to create practical UI/UX
  • Implement and maintain effective and efficient software development practices and policies that can scale with our team and business growth
  • Help us build a positive and inclusive culture

Required Skills and Experiences:

  • Bachelor's degree in software engineering, computer science, or a related field
  • 5+ years of proven experience
  • Proficiency in writing production applications in Python and C/Rust
  • Experience with systems programming, especially interfacing with hardware
  • Proficiency with Linux systems
  • Creative thinker and problem solver with an ability to break down complex problems into simple, implementable solutions
  • Strong analytical skills and desire to write clean, correct, and efficient code
  • High-quality verbal and written communication skills

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Familiarity with computer networking
  • A background in computer science, and a solid understanding of statistics and ML
  • Fluent in Python numerical computation frameworks such as numpy, SciPy, PyTorch
  • Expertise in frontend technologies and frameworks in Javascript like React or Svelte
  • Experience with ROS
  • Experience with UI/UX and prototyping designs for customer use
  • Part 107 FAA License
