Role summary

Seeking a hands-on Automation Engineer with strong machine-building experience to design, build, test, and deploy automated manufacturing systems in a medical device environment. This role requires expertise in mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems, combining engineering design with shop-floor execution. The engineer will be critical in delivering reliable automation solutions, supporting validation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives, while collaborating with cross-functional teams and ensuring safety compliance.

Job Summary

We are seeking a hands-on Automation Engineer with strong machine-building experience to support the design, build, testing, and deployment of automated manufacturing systems.

This role combines engineering design with shop-floor execution, requiring expertise in mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems. The engineer will play a critical role in delivering reliable automation solutions while supporting validation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

1. Design & Engineering

  • Design automated equipment and components using 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Interpret and develop mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and pneumatic diagrams
  • Select and source components, manage BOMs, and coordinate with vendors
  • Create technical documentation including setup sheets, SOPs, and manuals
  • Estimate project timelines, costs, and support design reviews

2. Machine Build & Assembly

  • Assemble, wire, and plumb automation equipment based on design specifications
  • Utilize shop tools and fabrication equipment for part modification and builds
  • Perform initial testing including power-up, leak testing, sensor validation, and safety checks
  • Update/redline drawings and provide feedback for design improvements

3. Testing, Validation & Implementation

- Support integration of hardware and software (PLC, HMI, robotics, vision systems)
- Participate in validation activities including IAT, FAT, and SAT

- Install and commission equipment on the production floor
- Establish process parameters and ensure system performance meets requirements
- Troubleshoot issues and implement long-term corrective solutions
- Train operators and technicians on equipment usage and maintenance

4. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Project Support

  • Collaborate with Production, Quality, Maintenance, and Engineering teams
  • Support new product builds and manufacturability reviews
  • Track project milestones, timelines, and resource needs
  • Assist in managing automation project budgets

5. Continuous Improvement & Safety

  • Drive initiatives to improve uptime, efficiency, and system reliability
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and OSHA guidelines
  • Recommend design and process improvements based on build/test feedback

Requirements:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field
  • 3–5+ years of experience in automation design, machine building, and system integration
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on fabrication and assembly experience
  • Ability to read and create technical drawings and electrical schematics
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and basic engineering tools
  • Strong communication and documentation skills
  • Ability to present technical updates and project status clearly
  • Proficiency in CAD tools (SolidWorks, Creo, AutoCAD)
  • Hands-on experience with PLC, HMI, robotics, vision systems, and industrial automation
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical mindset
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in medical device or regulated manufacturing environments
  • Hands-on exposure to machine building, automation assembly, and system validation
  • Familiarity with pneumatics, sensors, control panels, and industrial equipment
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies
