Role summary

State Farm is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to join their API Strategy and Enablement team, focusing on building the federated GraphQL API layer for a new Unified Insurance Platform. This hybrid role requires candidates to live within 180 miles of a hub location (Bloomington, IL; Richardson, TX; Dunwoody, GA; or Tempe, AZ). Responsibilities include scaling GraphQL APIs, developing automation for the platform, enhancing security architecture, and supporting the federated GraphQL platform. The ideal candidate is highly technical with strong customer and developer experience mindsets, proficient in Node.js, GraphQL, cloud technologies (AWS, Kubernetes), IaC, and CI/CD.

State Farm is investing in building a Customer-First, Future-Ready Unified Insurance Platform. The API Strategy and Enablement team will be at the forefront of this endeavor building out the federated GraphQL API layer of this new platform. This is an awesome opportunity to work on a team that will be creating and supporting a foundational piece of our new Unified Insurance Platform. Qualifications
We are looking for a Lead Software Engineer who is highly technical, possesses effective communication skills, and has both a strong customer and developer experience mindset.
What You Will Be Doing:
Individuals in this role will be responsible for the following scopes of work.

  • Assist team in scaling out the subgraph builds of new and existing GraphQL APIs that will be put on the Federated GraphQL Supergraph.
  • Work with our partners on the Merna and ROSA Enablement teams, building new automation and integration capabilities for the Unified Insurance Platform.
  • Enhancing the Supergraph security architecture to support multiple IDPs and MCP server interactions.
  • Providing support of the Federated GraphQL platform and its underlying components, e.g., router management, schema management, cluster management, and assisting teams in security configuration setup.

Qualifications:

  • Self-driven and has experience with software and infrastructure design.
  • Experience writing GraphQL schema and resolvers.
  • Experience with Federation Spec 2.0+
  • Experience with running a federated supergraph for an organization.
  • Experience writing code in Node.js and GO (Experience with Java could be considered but not required)
  • Experience with building, deploying, and testing with Docker.
  • Experience with IaC using terraform, tofu, and scalr.
  • Experience with common AWS technologies and services such as ECR, EKS, Route 53, API Gateway, IAM
  • Experience working with Elasticache (Redis)
  • Experience working with Kubernetes clusters, especially any experience with custom resource operators or Kustomize.
  • Experience working with deployment controllers (flux, helm) is a plus.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Entra and IAM, specifically experience in using and designing things that require federated access management.
  • Knowledge of supply chain security and zero-trust engineering practices
  • Experience working with Eventing architecture patterns using Kafka.
  • Experience designing and running intermediate to complex CI/CD Pipelines
  • Platform Engineering Experience is a plus.
  • Experience working with relational and NoSQL databases.

  • Potential starting salary range: $110,000 - $135,000
  • Starting salary will be based on skills, background, and experience
  • High end of the range limited to applicants with significant relevant experience
  • Potential yearly incentive pay up to 15% of base salary
