Role summary

About The Role
As a Principal Engineer within the AI/ML Platform team at DoorDash, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our AI-driven logistics and commerce platform. Your primary responsibility will be to define and execute the architectural vision for our machine learning and generative AI systems, ensuring they are scalable, reliable, and aligned with company objectives. You will translate strategic AI ambitions into practical platform roadmaps, setting standards for distributed training, high-performance inference, and generative AI capabilities. This role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, mentoring senior engineers, and influencing technical decisions at the organizational level. You will be based in San Francisco, Sunnyvale, or Seattle, working in a hybrid environment, and will report directly to the Director of Engineering, Machine Learning.
Qualifications
- 12+ years of experience in building and scaling distributed systems and machine learning infrastructure
- Deep expertise in large-scale training systems, high-throughput inference, and production LLM architectures
- Hands-on experience with modern large language models, including fine-tuning, evaluation frameworks, and guardrails
- Proven experience in architecting agentic systems, multi-step reasoning pipelines, and tool use frameworks
- Strong ability to translate company AI strategy into actionable platform architecture
- Experience leading multi-team technical initiatives and influencing senior leadership
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to debug complex distributed systems and optimize performance
- Effective communication skills to articulate technical concepts to diverse audiences
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; PhD preferred
Responsibilities
- Define the long-term architectural vision for DoorDash’s AI and GenAI platform, aligning with company goals
- Develop and maintain standards for distributed training, inference, and generative AI systems
- Lead the integration of GenAI capabilities such as model routing, fine-tuning frameworks, vector infrastructure, and RAG pipelines
- Mentor senior engineers, fostering engineering rigor, best practices, and technical excellence
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate AI strategies into scalable platform solutions
- Unblock teams by providing architectural guidance and resolving complex technical challenges
- Optimize platform performance, reliability, and cost efficiency at a global scale
- Participate in code reviews, system design, and performance tuning activities
- Stay abreast of emerging AI/ML trends and incorporate innovative solutions into the platform
