About The Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Staff / Senior Staff Machine Learning Infrastructure Engineer to lead the design, development, and evolution of Samsara’s end-to-end machine learning (ML) platform. This critical role involves overseeing the infrastructure that powers Safety AI and related product areas, combining deep platform ownership with direct product impact. The successful candidate will enable multiple teams to build, deploy, and scale ML systems that directly contribute to real-world safety outcomes. This position is remote and open to candidates based in the United States.

You will work on a range of technologies, from distributed computing frameworks such as Ray and Spark to cloud infrastructure on AWS, Kubernetes, and production observability tools. Your work will involve designing scalable online and batch inference systems, partnering with firmware and edge teams, and ensuring the reliability, security, and performance of ML systems across cloud and edge environments. You will provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, and influence cross-team decisions, all while embodying Samsara’s cultural principles of customer success, long-term thinking, growth, inclusivity, and teamwork.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in machine learning engineering or related fields, with a proven record of building and operating large-scale ML systems.
- Extensive experience with distributed computing frameworks such as Ray and/or Spark.
- Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, particularly AWS, along with containers/Kubernetes and production observability tools.
- Proven ability to support or build ML platforms used by multiple teams, including training, experimentation, and inference systems.
- Strong understanding of ML fundamentals, including evaluation, experiment design, and model iteration in production environments.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical strategy.
Preferred qualifications include experience with computer vision and large language models (LLMs), edge ML deployment, model lifecycle management, and working within security and compliance frameworks.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and operate Samsara’s comprehensive ML platform supporting training, experimentation, inference, and edge deployment.
- Partner with product teams and applied ML engineers to develop ML-powered features that enhance safety, reliability, and cost efficiency.
- Lead capacity planning and throughput estimation for new ML features from proof-of-concept to production-scale deployment.
- Design and implement experiment frameworks, define success metrics, and interpret evaluation results to inform product development.
- Standardize and evolve infrastructure for training and experimentation, including job orchestration, environment management, and experiment tracking.
- Develop scalable online and batch inference systems, ensuring observability, reliability, and consistent workflows across teams.
- Collaborate with firmware and edge teams to define deployment workflows and feedback loops for continuous improvement of models on devices.
- Ensure the security, reliability, and monitoring of ML systems across cloud and edge environments, managing incident response and infrastructure hardening.
- Provide technical leadership by setting architecture strategies, influencing cross-team decisions, and mentoring engineers and scientists.
- Promote best practices, contribute to open-source communities, and document technical solutions to improve developer experience.
- Lead high-priority initiatives from conception through production rollout, ensuring successful delivery and impact.
